The talent just isn't there outside of Hunter.

Maybe Arrighetti can piece it together, maybe not.

If Imai has a great season, he's bolting the second the offseason hits. The Mets, Yankees, Dodgers or Blue Jays will throw big money at him.

It's clear this team's SP problem got a heck of a lot worse with Valdez leaving. It's also clear the market for talented SP's is incredibly high - the only Astros any team would consider for an above average SP are Pena or Cam Smith.

Smith is controlled for many years, giving him premium value. Pena has 2 affordable years left.

What's clear is the time to pull the trigger is NOW. No more delays. And each passing week, as Pena's contract winds down, his trade value diminishes slightly.

What SP talent interests you, and who would you be willing to give up?

    @Dana Young

Seattle is stacked at SP and desperately needs offense to go along Raleigh.

    Seattle trades
Bryan Woo (many years of control)

    Houston trades
    Jeremy Pena
    Brice Young

Gilbert will be line for a contract soon, but Kirby is another SP with years of control and the ability to eat up innings.

It's a workable trade if the teams are willing to deal with division rivals.

    1) No chance the Mariners and Astros trade for starter level players this early when both still hope to compete.

    2) Who the hell is Brice Young?

    :D Mathews. Brice Mathews.

These are unprecedented times and they both have positions of the need. There are no "definites" when it comes to the trade market.

Unless it's a prime Garret Cole and prime JV, this means nothing.

For a SP who is a no-doubt playoff starter and has at least one additional year of control, I would be willing to trade anyone who is a FA before 2028 and/or anyone in the minors.

The deal would still need to make sense though.

There is no doubt it would hurt. Starting pitching is expensive and TOR SP is even more expensive.

But it can't hurt the overall chances of winning in 2026 or completely gut the top prospects roster AGAIN.

There has to be a balance, or else you just give up on 2026 trading away your rentals and reload for 2027.

Not even considering resigning Framber was a huge mistake. If you pay anyone, you pay high end ace pitchers. They are the most valuable asset to have during a playoff run and you need 2 of them to have a real shot. The idea that the could replace him with “stuff” was ludicrous from the beginning.

When would you have signed him? He signed the highest AAV deal ever for a lefty pitcher ... in February. If you wanted to him earlier in the offseason, you'd have to have to pay him way more. That means no Imai and probably having to dump Walker for junk to free up salary space.

He currently has an ERA of 4.76 and WHIP of 1.47.

Why lose anyone when Trevor Bauer is available for free?

Maybe we could bring back Roberto Osuna as well to help shore up the pen!

Kansas City has a lot of straight forward options for the Astros to look at.

They need offense + outfielders and have plenty of SP's

But they don't need SS or 3B , so Pena isn't going to interest them.

Noah Cameron - Consistent sophomore with many years of team control left. Weak contact guy as opposed to stuff but proving consistently accurate.

Kris Bubic - Expiring contract coming off a breakout season. Royals would rather not commit salary to him with all the young talent they have. Cheaper trade value than Cameron as everyone knows he's a goner. Not the kind of contract the Astros give out, so would be a 1 year rental.

Michael Wacha - Workhorse, Elderly, affordable for 3 more years

    Seth Lugo - 36, 4 ERA workhorse

I'd take advantage of Christian walker's start and offer him for Michael Wacha straight up. At the very least, Seth Lugo could be had. All have similar contracts but I'm much more comfortable with elderly pitchers as we've seen guys like Morton, Verlander performing into their 40s. Brice Mathews would be a utility add on if walker is not enough.
