This team does not prioritize three pointers enough

Amen doesn’t suck as you contend. But it’s difficult to expect to win when he can’t shoot more than 10-12 ft. He did flash ability to shoot 15 ft or more in the playoffs with a dribble pullup move. Hopefully he continues to work and improve. A stretch 5 would be nice but not necessary. Moving Sengun is the priority since he has made this offense stagnant last 3 years. Either get a defensive center or stretch and a real 2 guard in here and slide Amen to the 3 or bench. I don’t mind trading Amen but has to be for a star 2 guard.

Mentioning Adams and Capela is kinda unfair, it's not uncommon for traditional centers to literally go an entire season without shooting a 3 or only shooting them in expiring shot clock / end of quarter situations.
Capela actually made the first 3 ball of his career this season, he has a total of 8 attempts in his 12 year career.
In Adams 12 years he's 1-12 .... Clevelands Jarrett Allen was 1-10 for the season. Luke Cornet of San Antinio played 68 games and didn't take a single 3, Rudy Gobert 5 attempts for the season.

That's just normal for a traditional center.

I hate to say it, but this comes back to Amen being not just a bad shooter, but a complete non-shooter that kills spacing. In 79 games he took a total of 116 3's. That's 1.4 per game.

It's one thing to state that Jae'sean Tate is a poor shooter at 31% .... but he will take them in the flow of the offense when they are open looks and defenders do close out on him.
Amen is so bad that he doesn't want to shoot those, even if they are open. He'll pass or do something else besides shoot. Defenders know that and don't defend against what they know isn't coming or if it does come, there's an 80% chance it's a missed shot.
That defender not having to respect that shot creates opportunities for the other four defenders on the court .... guys can be more aggressive or double team elsewhere - better close outs on the actual shooters.

As to the team totals, I think a big part of that is again Amen, the guy leads the league in minutes and takes fewer 3's per 36 than any non-center in the league by a longshot (well, accept his twin) from what is traditionally a higher volume 3 point shooting position.
Amen Thompson's 3 point attempts per 36 was 1.4 from the guy who leads the league in minutes.
Tate doubles Amen's per 36 basis 3 point attempts as a wing at 2.8.
JD Davison, who shot 25% for the season put up 5.3 on a per 36 basis.

That Per 36 numbers account for some of the lower total number of 3's taken team wide, enough to move the Rockets from the bottom 5 to the middle of the pack or slightly better league wide.

I'm not criticizing them as players. I'm criticizing the front office for choose to go with guys like this on a team where the best two young players are Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun.

I agree that Amen's lack of 3P shooting plays a significant role in this--but he's a very good player despite that, and still has the highest ceiling on the team. When you see that, the response of a well-run organization should be "we need to compensate for that", not "let's just go with even more non-shooters". That's what this thread is about.

It’s unfortunate and I have always said if he can at the very least shoot from 3 even if it’s 34% we would be very hard to beat. But he can’t and teams sag and cheat and trap Sengun and Durant.
