I'm thinking about forking over the cash to buy a 250GB SSD for my Macbook Pro and then using the current drive as a time machine backup. However, I don't really want to do the hardware upgrade myself. I was wondering if there are any licensed shops in Houston that people have experience that could do this for me and transfer my system to the new drive. Thanks in advance.
I know I'm not answering your question, but buying a large SSD right now probably isn't a great idea. It'd be better to keep it smallish (~80gb) for your OS/programs, and have a mechanical HDD for storage. I'm not sure how possible that is with a Macbook, though.
Not really doable with the laptop as I rarely am in a situation where I can setup an external drive conveniently. Not to mention I have Mac and Windows 7 both on my machine. 80 gb wouldn't get me very far.
plenty of stores will swap drives in laptops etc. Staples, Bestbuy, etc..... I wouldn't invest in a large SSD at the moment, smaller ones are starting to come down in price. A year or so the big ones should too.
We usually send people to Microcenter at the store. What I can tell you is that AppleCare is still valid even after you change that drive out. It won't cover the new SSD, but it will cover the other original parts in your computer.
You need to do a LOT of research before you do this. Many SSDs do not work with Apple's hard drive controller, even though they work fine in any other laptop. AnandTech had an article about that issue a while back.
