    Sometimes.

We also literally just emerged from a Rockets era where we traded for a star. And we also saw how the odds and timing work with the draft most recently.

I wonder if it's possible to do something like a double sign-and-trade... I'm not sure if there are any specific rules forbidding that if it's 1-for-1? Meaning Tari + a pick for Scoot.

    SGA?

    Brunson?

The trick is, you need generational luck to land a true star in any scenario but draft isn't the only way.

I think Mitchell Robinson is the only player in the NYK rotation that was drafted by them. Lakers and Raptors got their recent championships by acquiring their stars via free agency and trades as well. And the Lakers got prime Luka via trade due to Nico Harrison's idiocy. Funny how things always work out for that team.

as long as we have Stone, it doesn't matter how many picks we get. Stone just drafts whatever Givony's mock draft says.

welp... i'd say the last franchise star we drafted was 2002... and the last one we traded for 2012... so I think there are a couple routes...
Personally, I'm always one to deal draft pix for proven commodities... how many guys retain their value with regards to draft position vs future value?
There are Dillon Brookses to be signed and KDs to trade for...
    Battier or Rudy Gay...?

to me it really matters if u have great talent evaluators. Obviously you can’t be right all of the time, even the greats get it wrong occasionally. But if you have a really good eye for talent the way Ainge, Jerry West, Presti, etc do, then I think it makes sense to focus on the draft. I think for the most part the successful teams build through the draft. There are so many advantages to drafting and developing players. Build a core, and add to that course with smart trades and FA’s. But it doesn’t have to be in that order as long as you are targeting young players. I really wish we had great talent scouting and player development.

i can agree with all of that... but there's also evaluating character, work ethic, iq, etc.... which is another reason that I prefer a proven commodity... otherwise u get these 18 or 19 yo kids that become instant millionaires and that has to twist their minds... r they going to keep working and realize their potential - or are they gonna be in the clubs making it rain...? Even with a few years, u can still get the Larry Sanders effect... thats why i'd take Battier over the potential of Rudy Gay...
