I don't think this is that much of a hot take. I've just watched a whole lot of better films being that I regularly watch a lot of foreign films, and when you do that, you sorta get used to a lot more character building and more daring movies. My taste in films are much more geared to substance over flash. I mean PTA pulls out every trick in the book, but you have to admit: the guy spent five minutes before he has Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor meet. It is a little contrived on the plot. I am not sure how Sean Penn survived a gun shot to the face and barreling his car off of a cliff. But PTA didn't care about the Hows of the film, only if it served his purpose. Like I said, I've seen too many better films to be wowed by this one. I mean I saw: No other choice, which was more satisfying to me. It had an element of Hitchcock in it, although Chan-wook is a little too hollywood for my tastes. If you want to watch daring films with heavy-handed messages, try a Jessica Hausner film. Watch Club Zero and then you will find out how unflinching someone can be when they literally don't care what the audience thinks. That film is sinister.
Watching Along Came Polly for the first time probably since it came out in 2004. I forgot Hank Azaria is the French guy. His characters crack me up. And PSHoffman, what a treasure. ha, and Kevin Hart
I am a renaissance man, to be sure. But I do enjoy both high brow and low brow entertainment. Recently, I have been spending a lot of money and time on collecting current female pop music. Previous to that I discovered foreign movies by way of a few films that introduced me to the genre: one was Two Days One Night starring Marion Cotillard. One of her finest performances. After that, I discovered the fantastic library of world cinema that Kino Lorber has and I never went back. Objectively speaking, foreign films are just better movies, period. The only movies that I do still enjoy from hollywood is modern horror. I did enjoy Anora though a lot, Tar was unbelievable as well, and of course I think a lot of Inglorious Bastards, which is Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece. I just love the foreign aspect of that film.
Project Hail Mary - 9 /10. Saw it with the fam. Enjoyed it and would recommend. Hard to describe without spoilers. A science teacher wakes up alone on a spaceship. As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing Earth's sun and that an unexpected friendship may be the key. There are some plot twists to keep it interesting. Maybe went a little long. I do think that I will pick up the book later this summer, to see what if anything got left out.
I picked up the book this weekend, heading to Mexico in May and this will be my book to read while I chill on the beach
Sorcerer (1977): 7/10 Weird title. Nothing do with the fantasy genre. Incredible visuals and practical effects. Not a lot of dialogue.
with the break in the playoffs I decided to watch Marty Supreme. Enjoyed it, but conflicted about where it stands rating-wise. Chalamet is impressive as usual, the whole thing was more of a farce than either a comedy or drama. Plot-wise it almost felt like a Wes Anderson film, stylistically it gave off kind of a Peaky Blinders vibe. Like I said I enjoyed it, but maybe it's a 7.5/10 for me? not sure I'd watch it again.
Watched it as well this weekend. Thought it was solid, but it seemed very chaotic which I suspect was supposed to be that way. Also watched Nuremberg while my wife was sleeping in on Sunday. I enjoyed it but needed subtitles to catch a lot of the softer dialogue moments. Probably a film I would enjoy more the 2nd time watching.
Watched The Friend this weekend for the second time, man its underrated, I had never even heard of it but it's really good....Casey Affleck was tremendous
Been wanting to rewatch A History of Violence for a while, and it finally showed up on streaming (HBO). It's every bit as good as I remembered it. In the realm of Viggo Mortenson mob movies not sure if I like it or Eastern Promises better.
Watch . . IN THE GREY last night. It was decent. Not typical Guy Richie fair but good. Iron Lung - again it was decent but nothing overwhelming Obsession - IT was cool. Dragged at some points but overall it was ok The Gates - It was a cool movie. Nothing spectacular Rocket River
I watched Play Dirty on Prime with Marky Mark and Lakieth Stanfield. I'm a big Lakieth Stanfield fan. This movie was a fun dumb watch so if you want something like that you will like this 6/10.
