This article is worth a read. I included a few excerpts. His disturbing and dangerous mindset is not what I approve of for the man leading our military, but that's what we get when Trump's in charge. He sounds no different than a radical religious extremist terrorist, and that's scary. A fanatic like that, with no boundaries on cruelty, minimal military leadership experience, and a thirst for blood is only going to put our troops in more danger. After all, if we have no restraint on the ethics of war, we can't expect any from our enemies.

Pete Hegseth Just Revealed the Real Roots of His Sadism and Rage

Does God want America to kill as many of our enemies as we can—in as violent a fashion as possible? We have a defense secretary who apparently thinks so.

Presidents have at times claimed divine blessing for conflicts or pronounced the enemy godless. It’s of course understandable that troops facing danger would pray for deliverance.

But Hegseth is doing something different. It’s unusual for a defense secretary to directly appeal to God—his God exclusively—to assist in maximal killing, says Ronit Stahl, a historian of the military chaplaincy. What’s notable is Hegseth’s suggestion that God actively approves of as much killing as possible, and his enlistment of God in making it “overwhelming”—supremely violent and brutal.

Hegseth’s prayer also displays something else: With fresh clarity, it exposes how the roots of his bloodthirstiness lie in his particular brand of right-wing Christianity.

Hegseth has open contempt for limits on what our military can inflict on foes. He has called for “no quarter” and “no mercy for our enemies.” That means killing enemies who have surrendered—a war crime. His executions of suspected Caribbean drug-runners violate international law—and possibly U.S. law and American military codes as well.

Western civilization has also bequeathed to us another legacy worth invoking here: The just war tradition, which is grounded in conceptions of our common humanity.

These ideals generally include prohibitions on needless wars; on excessive cruelty; and on unnecessarily wanton and unrestrained killing, especially of civilians and combatants who surrender, among other things. Hegseth has violated all of them: The rationale for his war is based on lies. He casts his maximally brutal killing as an inherent good. His war has killed nearly 1,500 civilians, including many children. He lionizes the killing of enemies who surrender.

But Hegseth answers to a higher authority. Utterly incapable of genuine humility, Hegseth knows with unshakable certainty that those simply cannot be transgressions. No: They’re all in God’s plan.

    Pentagon chaplains allege chilling retaliation

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Randy Manner says he has spoken with 'dozens and dozens' of active-duty chaplains who feel marginalized for not aligning with Hegseth’s worldview. Some report exclusion from staff meetings and fear retaliation for voicing concerns. A Pentagon insider described the environment as 'terrifying,' with personnel worried about being punished or fired for rejecting a Christian nationalist stance.

An unnamed member of a recent Joint Chiefs chairman's team warned that Hegseth’s hyper-Christian framing of military operations 'flies in the face of the freedom of religion' guaranteed by the Constitution. Critics argue that such rhetoric undermines the military’s role as a pluralistic institution defending diverse beliefs. Hegseth’s calls for 'overwhelming violence' in the 'name of Jesus Christ' have intensified these concerns.

The controversy illustrates a causal chain where leadership rhetoric shifts institutional tone, leading to alleged retaliation, eroding internal trust, and raising public doubts about the military’s neutrality. Historically, U.S. defense leaders avoided overt sectarian framing to maintain cohesion and uphold constitutional principles. Comparisons to past conflicts show that such departures can have lasting impacts on morale, recruitment, and public confidence in democratic institutions.

Yeah, Dumb McNamara doesn't really even capture it at all. Yes, he's dumb, but McNamara had a sort of (coldly) intellectual code.

Kegsbreath is more like Jack Ripper from Strangelove.

Send the lambs to slaughter then pray for them. As if fighting against gun reform, promoting images of themselves and their kids with AR-15s, then praying for the victims at every mass shooting wasn't bad enough.

If you serve in the mil under this man who thinks that doing war crimes are the whole point of having a military - you are morally culpable - resign/quit for your own sake

Hegseth: "On the Strait of Hormuz, there are many more vessels flowing through today than there were, as the president has arranged."

Just a straight up lie. Ships are going through the Strait because Iran has arranged (and received money for said arrangement). And all the ships were going through before this war started.

It's why he Hegseth fought so hard to call Kelly a traitor, reduce his rank, and prosecute him. Hegseth wants to be able to demand his troops follow his orders, illegal or not.

Imagine being a soldier out there with a Commander in Chief and Secretary of Defense who will straight up lie to your face, and try to cover their own asses the minute things go haywire, pointing the blame to someone else.

Nobody should have to give up their career because of the appointed leader. If Hegseth gives illegal orders it's him that should be yanked from position and prosecuted. The same goes for Trump. They can impeach his lying evil ass for war crimes.

You shouldn't have to but at some point there's a line - I know lots of people who quit good positions at State DOJ etc rather than be an instrument of an evil regime

Some people in the military don't have an easy opportunity to find jobs in their area that transfer to the civilian sector. Imagine only having 10 years or less left to draw full benefits for retirement, and losing all you sacrificed for your family. It would be a tough choice for those with families, especially considering inflation and healthcare costs, or if they live in base housing and don't own a home. It would be easier for someone with a less than 5 years in to make that choice, especially if they were single.

Try being a Foreign Service officer in DC - same boat.

People with decades of experience & deep networks of contacts just being thrown out in favor of - literally nothing. The US invested billions of dollars in training up corps of experts across every possible discipline and the Regime is just setting it on fire in order to do things like lose a war to Iran

A young veteran told me a story recently. On the first day of basic training the drill sergeant lined up everyone and asked them why they signed up. One after another-- they were patriotic, wanted to fight for truth justice and the American way etc. He lined them up again after a run so brutal many were practically collapsing and puking. The drill sergeant asked again and said "now tell me the truth". One after another "I had a sick kid needing a huge surgery without insurance, " I come from a small town and no jobs and no one has ever gone to college in my family", " I was hopelessly behind on child payments, tired of being threatened with jail" etc.

It is a crying shame that war is the first option for our upper class send other people's kids to war while they make the money on the 6 big monopolist "defense" stocks and war.

We have thrown away so many people with decades of experience across the whole board, from the military, healthcare, research, scientists, meteorologists, environmentalists, and everyone else whose knowledge and experience can't be replaced for at least a decade, if not more. All to fund the war regime, ICE, and execute Project 2025 and the wishes of a malignant lying corrupt and incompetent narcissist with no true agenda but to rule like a dictator, escape prison for numerous felonies, and enrichen himself and his family businesses around the world.

Nobody should ever vote again for the Republican Party. All this is on every single one of those spineless brown shirts who let it happen, and not only blocked Democrats the entire time, but started revenge on blue states that tried to make changes.

Whether it's Vance, Rubio, or any other brown shirt they should be destroyed at a run for President if Americans were smart. Changing their tubes later doesn't cut it. They are complicit.

I don't think Pete is anything but an arrogant performer who loves attention.

Funny how these knuckleheads act with impunity assuming a pardon will be forthcoming. Trump gonna throw your ass under the bus soon for this entire Iran fiasco ala Noem, ain't no pardon coming for you, kegstand.

Pardons won't help with war crimes at The Hague.

There's going to be a long line for this admenstruation at The Hague when all is said and done.

Military service doesn’t work that way. Enlisted service member are under contract for a certain number of years. Commissioned officers have to request to be released from the service. They serve “at the pleasure of the President.” It’s not a normal 9-5 that you can just quit whenever you feel like it.
