My brother is going to be in Alexandria this summer and I plan on visiting in either June or July (I know it's going to be hot, but whatever). I want to see as much of Egypt as possible (pyramids, Cairo, beaches, etc.) and have quite a bit a of vacation saved up (so I can take up to 3 weeks off from work, if necessary).

My question is...what's the cheapest way to get to Egypt from the US? Direct flights to Cairo seem pricey, and I know there are tons of low-cost airlines that fly to multiple Egyptian cities from Europe -- any tips on this? Also, what city has the best beaches (Alexandria, Sharm El Sheikh, etc)? What cities can't I miss? What major cities are worth skipping out on?

I don't know anything about traveling to Egypt, but I am interested.. I've been to a decent # of places, but not to that area of the world yet

Im Egyptian. Your best bet is probably going through Air France with a stop in Paris or Lufthansa with a stop in Germany. Should cost you around 900-1200 if you time it right and do it early.

$900 would be great. Do you and your family usually book through a travel agent when you go back? I know it's cheaper to do this for some parts of the world (my family uses a travel agent whenever flying to Pakistan). Or do you just buy tickets yourself online?

I was assuming you live in Houston.

    Depart June 1st ---

IAH > LHR via British Airways

LHR > CAI via British Airways

    Arrive June 2nd ---

    Depart June 22nd ---

CAI > LHR via British Airways

LHR > IAH via British Airways

    Arrive June 22nd ---

I am a pilot and I can tell you, this is a very good price for a trip to a place like this.

That is a great price, thanks. Did you use BritishAirways.com? I'll be departing from Chicago, rather than Houston.

So I booked my flight, ended up getting a great deal to Cairo.

After accounting for travel time, we'll have 13 full days in Egypt. Any tips on how much time we should spend in each city/region?

I was checking flights in the region, and it's fairly cheap (<$300 RT) to fly to Beirut, so we might spend a weekend there. If we do go to Beirut, is Damascus worth visiting too? I think it's only 60 miles away.

In Egypt, we plan on checking out Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, and maybe Alexandria.

Thoughts/recommendations? Should we nix Lebanon all together?

    Bump

I'm leaving for Egypt on Wednesday, and was looking for a few last minute tips.

Any tips on how to best avoid getting sick? (my brother who is there right now just got food poisoning this past weekend and had a 104-degree fever)

Also, has anyone been overland from Egypt to Israel? We were thinking of checking out Jerusalem/Tel Aviv for a few days.

Just wondering here, but how much did you pay for a roundtrip ticket to Cairo? I heard it was close to $1500 this time of the year.

Bingo. I bought two separate tickets. One direct ticket from Chicago to London on Virgin Atlantic. Second ticket from London to Cairo (via Rome) on Alitalia. The London-Cairo ticket only cost me $250 rountrip taxes included.
