Anybody familiar with this writer/NBA analyst from USA today? I've been doing a bit of back-reading and he seems pretty intelligent. Plus he's a Dream/Yao fan so that doesn't hurt..here are a few of his quotes from chats...

Towson MD: Hi David. Should Yao Ming's broken foot take him out of contention for an All NBA First Team Nod? I think Yao's been the best center this season when he's played. His numbers are better than Shaq's (and they've missed a similar number of games). What do you think? Are people still gonna sleep on Yao when it's time to pick the All NBA first squad?
David DuPree: He's my All-NBA First Team center, broken foot and all.

sumter, sc: Thank you for being a realist. I agree with you on your MVP choice. Do you think he has a chance of winnning it?
David DuPree: I think too many people hate the way he is, too much to overlook it and judge him on his basketball ability alone. That's too bad. If you think Nash or LeBron or Dirk had a better season and one of them is more deserving, then vote for one of them, but if you say Kobe is selfish or Kobe is a jerk and don't vote for him for those reasons, that's not right. I can say one thing with absolute certainty: Kobe Bryant wants to win and that is why he is the way he is. You don't need to judge him, just vote for him or don't vote for him and move on

Tommy, Portland: David. One question. Is the center positon dead. What has happened to the great centers? In the 80's had "The Dream", Sampson, Ewing, Robinson, and le'ts not forget about Stuart Gray. Are today's players all about dunking? There was nothing sweeter than the " The Dream Shake".
David DuPree: I'm with you. My favorite moves of all time are Hakeem's Dream Shake and Kareem's sky hook. What happened to all the centers is that they want to be jump shooters and point guards, handle the ball and show off. There is one great center on the way, though: Greg Oden. So don't despair. But the prototypical old-school center is a thing of the past. Teams want guys who can step out onto the floor and spread the defense and guard people on the perimeter. Everything goes in cycles, though, and as soon as three or four "real" centers come along, everybody will want one again

Houston,TX: Should Houston trade TMAC for the one pick this year?
David DuPree: Absolutely not. When healthy, McGrady is one of the 10 best players in the league, and besides that, whoever gets the first pick in the draft can't afford to take a chance on McGrady's bad back. It's too big of a risk.

Houston, TX: Dream in his prime or Shaq in his prime? I say Dream. He was as unstoppable as Shaq in the low post. He had better range. And he's livelier on defense.
David DuPree: Tough question, but I do agree, Olajuwon may have ben the most underrated great player ever. Shaq was more powerful, but for total package, I take Olajuwon.

: Philly: Dave what’s up, a few chats back I read where you compared Dominique Wilkins to one of the most underrated players of all time James Worthy. No comparison. James Worthy was a NCAA champion and was the best player on that team even though they had Mike Jordan. Remember how he destroyed Georgetown with Ewing? We will never know if the Lakers would have won with Wilkins in the lineup but we do know they won with Worthy. Adrian Dantley was with Detroit and they didn’t start winning championships till he left ,Michael Jordan didn’t win any NCAA titles after James left. You stated that winning is overrated. Winning is the ultimate stat and the only reason to play the game. Dominique Wilkins and Charles Barkley are the precursors to Iverson and others who don’t win but are considered great because of their individual stats at the expense of winning.
David DuPree: I diagree, but I certainly respect your opinion and know that a large number of people do agree with you. How you win, to me, however, is just as important as the actual winning and I refuse to define anyone for not winning in a team sport. We all do what we can do. I in no way meant to down play the ability or contributions of James Worthy. Iverson and Barkley did what they felt they had to do to give their teams the best chance at winning and both got to the NBA FInals.

I like his approach to things--especially his point about not holding a single player responsible for winning in a team sport. I'll be checking out his chats every week during the off seasn.
