I did too for 6 years (1986-92) when I first moved to Houston. Must have been out of my mind.

On my Buick's A/C, one mechanic said I had a leak that would cost $500-600 to fix. So I went and had a friend put in two cans of coolant for 20 bucks. That was on May 15th. Lucky me. I'll do this indefinitely if I can.

Don't knock manual labor: Depending on the dealership, techs can make a VERY good living. A childhood friend started at a Mercedes dealership making $35K when he was 19. He was making over $50K by the time he was 22 or so. He's 32 now, and has since taken over a shop that specializes in Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche, making well over six figures. Granted he now owns the shop, but he still turns wrenches for a living. Had he stayed on at the original Mercedes dealership and become, say, a crew chief, he'd have been making ~$125-$150K.

Don't even get me started on what Ferrari pays its techs.

I wasn't knocking techs. I was just pointing how dealerships take all the money. I think I am just going to eat the 900 bucks.

Actually, we haven't spoken in years. I get updates through the family via his folks. Its somewhere north in the Spring/Woodlands area.
