On Friday (8/12/2005), Beijing was being assaulted simultaneously by triple forces of mother nature: thick fog, lightening/thunder, and heavy rain. According to experts, China's capital has not seen this kind of weather for more than a decade. Xinhua News reported a female Greek tourist was killed and her male companion was injured by lightning strike while they were touring a section of the Great Wall in suburban Beijing Friday afternoon. Three people died from a head-on collision between a truck and a bus, and dozens were seriously injured due to weather related traffic accidents elsewhere around the city. The humidity is over 90%.

Hopefully this won't happen 3 years from now, when Beijing is hosting the Summer Olympics from the 8th August to 24th August in 2008.

I agree what Beijing experienced on Friday is nothing compared to what monsoon hit Bombay over a week ago. But my point was can you imagine this kind of weather (in Beijing) happens during a Summer Olympic Game?

I never being to kunming so I can't speak about it, but I think an olympic city have to be farily modern. You have to have a lot of modern amenities, transportation, hotels, etc. The city would have to be fairly developed with good/adequate stadiums and arenas. I'm just not sure if some where Kunming can get all the infrastructures in place that well.

Personally, I'm Shanghainese so I feel that even Beijings a little backwards and Shanghai would've made a better host city, but that's just my regional bias speaking ;) :D
