You remind me of the Cavs coach, "analytically we won 2 games" type stuff. IF those stats say that Reed defends better than guys like OG, Castle, etc. then the stats are junk. Or you are interpreting them incorrectly.
Idk when you went full dumbass but it’s getting pathetic bro.. We get it you live in hyperboles and spurs fandom now. Get back to us when your emotions settle. Every game thread or post is a fixation on Reed stepping the wrong way or breathing wrong.
Don’t tell @TheRealist137 , his guy Tari was maligned and he has hate for a basically first year 15ppg guy that had some of the highest win shares on the entire team Maybe he’ll realize that the rockets would turn Trevor ariza lite Castle into Joey Dorsey here these spurs simps should just forum hop at this point
Funny how you call me a Spurs fan when I am rooting for the Knicks this series and HATE the fact that Castle is better than Reed. I wish Reed was the better pick, I really do.
He is the better pick for sure, but you’re making a pretty blinders on mistake of thinking Castle was better coming into the league and would be the better fit or develop the same way. I don’t think he would be half as good as amen here offensively we teach players how to be idiots likewise if the spurs were to draft Reed (which all signs point to they were) they weren’t going to draft or develop someone into a bust. That literally never happens to them
Finally recovered from a disappointing season. Figured I'd take a look at the per 3 for both. While they won't capture Castle's superior defense, Reed holds up well with traditional stats. Reed played about 100 more minutes this season and Castle's usage was 4% higher, so it makes for a really good comparison. Reed's Per 36: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sheppre01.html https://ibb.co/C3w4ynPR Castle's per 36: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/castlst01.html https://ibb.co/q3h8Mz7h Reed wins on shooting efficiency eFG% of .550 vs .521. Castle has 20 pts per 36 to Reed's 18.6. Reed takes 1 more shot and is more efficient but Castle gets to the line 5.4 more times a game (but only make 73% vs. 80%). Castle leads in rebounds at 6.4 to 4 but loses in blocks (.3 to .9), steals (1.4 to 2), and fouls (3.8 to 2). Where i gets interesting is assists to turnovers. Castle is at 8.9(!!) with 4.8 turnovers for a 2.34:1. Reed is 4 to 2 for a 2:1. While I couldn't be assed to take more screen shots, the advanced stats show that Castle's Ast% is 34 to Reed's 18.6. The math gets tough here becasue Castle has a higher usage on a team that shot it more and shot it better than us. But if you want to adjust for usage and situation, you can consider bumping Reed to a 5:2.5. The only thing you can say for sure is that they're similar passers but Castle either finds or gets more assist opportunites. I think the passing numbers are intersting because they let you tell either a good or bad story with respect to Reed. Good story: NBA players are the most consitent year-to-year athletes in the world. History has shown us that if you give a 2:1 assist guy more ballhandling reps he raw numbers will scale up. If Ime just let him be the F'ing point guard, he could easily be 6:2 guy. Bad story: You're right about that scaling thing. The problem is Reed's handle isn't good enough to get those opportunies. And without that, his defense means he's a 6th man unless you have an elite rim protector to cover. Personally, it's year two and the numbers are telling me both guys are who we thought they were. If Castle improve his jumper to good he wins. If Reed improves his handle and D more, he wins. Castle's a safer bet right now to "be better."
The entire criticism of defensive stats is that unlike points etc they are hard to measure and allow for free-riding by bad defnders or penalize strong defenders on bad teams. Like literally use your eyes to see Reed being a bad defender and targeted repeatedly by opposing teams and giving up tons of points as a result, it's not hard! But really even if you insist on stats, i don't know man, I just pulled up his on-off rating, the Rockets defense gets goes from 112 to 115 when he's on the court last year - that's worse! So it's not "there is no statistical indicator" - there is at least 1, and there are many more, but I don't really need to dig deeper to know that he sucks, the evidence is pretty overwhelming at this point. I don't even think Reed Sheppard woudl argue with you that he's a bottom tier defender.
Castle is not better than Reed, he has the benefit of playing with Wemby. Castle is a better defender and athlete, but Reed is a better basketball player. I think both teams are happy with their picks as they should be. DD
Here's some cool on/off stats Reed played 1933 non garbage time possessions without Sengun and the defensive rating was 106.5 (97th percentile) Castle played 1704 non garbage time possessions without Wemby and the defensive rating was 115.8 (51st percentile) People here VASTLY underestimate how insane wemby is on defense and VASTLY overestimate the impact a non big can have on defense.
I would say it’s common sense this dude is a straight up role player without Wemby as we all saw yesterday
I totally get why....we're fans...but this board has a huge history of believing that the players on the roster are awesome and everything else is the problem. Goes back to Steve Francis, honestly. I engage less and less with it...but watching players wildly miss open shots and then blaming everything else is just wild to me. Sorry we couldn't get you more wide open than you already were when you missed the rim. I'm sure another coach can get you even wider open! and i'm a fan too...I love Reed, and hope he kicks ass. I'm saying this more big picture than just about him on this
Fair post. The assist stats are interesting. The two guys are clearly used very differently on offense. As you said, you can put it in either a good narrative or bad narrative. Good: The Rockets simply doesn't use Reed as the main PG enough and they don't have enough reliable shooters around him. Bad: Reed just doesn't have the ballhandling for the Rockets to rely on him to be a main creator. I think the truth is probably somewhere in between. Reed's ballhandling needs serious upgrade. But I've been saying that he's not just an undersized shooting guard. He can pass and he has good court vision. He needs more confidence and more trust from his coach and teammates. And he needs to embrace contact and get to the line more.
Sheppard would never guard Brunson the way Castle does. Amen and Castle would be a fearsome defensive lockdown duo
Doesn’t really matter honestly. Stone and company took Reed 3rd overall. They need for him to pan out as at least a consistent rotation player. I’m not completely out on him but the clock is ticking.
lmao this guy isn't even Temu Trevor Ariza going back to the thunder series and CF is here blowing their load over this clown lmfao I seriously can't explain this
