If it's a team friendly deal, then I am down. But if it's a market setting contract then no thanks (like they care what I think), will you have to pay more if he has a year like his rookie year, probably. And I love CJ, but I don't want what happened to the Cards or Dolphins, you overpay for an average QB who "could" have upside. IMO a smart GM looks for a bargain after what have seen in 3 years, will Mulaghetti take that, probably not so just ride this year out $50 Mill put him at #11 just behind Jalen Hurts and just above D4
Amazing folks still don’t understand how much $ a simply competent QB commands. There will be lots of crying after Stroud signs a new deal. Book it.
Agree. I hate the idea of signing him long term before the season. We still don't know if his concussions and playoff performances last year will repeat themselves. You have to hope that with a better offensive line he will shine, but I'm still wanting to see him prove himself before rewarding him ahead of time and regretting it later.
I don't want a CJ extension this offseason. I want him to earn money with some urgency. And I think this 2026 team deserves to have full focus, worry on QB market rate later. But if it's about signing while value is lowest, this might be best time.
Signing him early would be one of the foolish decisions this organization has made. He simply must prove the past few seasons have been an anomaly before committing to him. Also, consider the 2027 QB class is considered loaded, so it's also ideal time to make him prove it or figure out your plan to move on or have a solid backup plan in place. Committing to him after the past few years prematurely is the kind of decision that gets people fired.
At this point. both sides are right. CJ did play well enough, last 2 games not included in this assessment. But overall, 3 years of data indicate he is in at least top half of the league. Disaster in last 2 games notwithstanding. it's easy to say what have you done for me lately and that's life. But life sometimes throws you a curse ball and it's up to you to adjust. I do believe he will adjust. The team did a lot in this off season to get things fixed and in general, I think they have, OL looks to be much better (we hope), there is a RB1 now who is a bull. Defense looks to be even better. In the end, it is all about health. On paper, this is SB capable team, but only if healthy. This year can go to crap if 2 or 3 of the primary all-pros get hurt. That is also life...
3 years of data show regression. He was not “good” last year outside of 3.5 games that greatly inflated his overall numbers. Which still were average. Bottom of the top half QBs is not the goal. If he can be a top 10 guy, like Goff or Dak, then pay him and build around him. But definitely not top 10 money right now
Did not say he is top 10. Did not say to pay him now. Just saying he is not crap and did do enough to be considered. While he does want to be paid, don't we all? It's also likely team may wait until end of year for a new contract. That option is on the table for a reason. You already know why. If CJ didn't lose the last game by himself, he would have a new contract like WAJ. Now, if he didn't do the 4 INT.... (if, if, if) He knows, There is a reason he is cutting down the other stuff in the off season. Now you can say he should have done this before... That, is the past and he likely wish but he does have a valid excuse. The man was hurt last year. Again, life happens.
At this point. Paying him now would not make sense. No one will be happy. Too low or too high. Doesn't matter. Get to SB and win, then Texans will pay, but at that point it will be high. But with SB in back pocket, who cares. But if he "flames out" then really, this team is cursed.
This team isn't cursed it's just that the McNair's didn't learn anything from Bob McNair's mistake of getting involved with picking a QB.
What QB would you have liked? Even without Stroud, the Texans would not have been in the position to get Caleb or Maye the following year because I think they would have won too many games. So with that said, Name a QB, outside of those 2, picked in between 2023-2025 that you would have wanted? No way the Texans were giving big money to Sam Darnold.
They picked a QB who won RoY and was a middle of the pack QB last year (statistically he was 10-15 by every possible measure). Yes, he ended the year horribly - all right after a big concussion - and maybe he’ll never be good again. But to paint CJ as some horrible bust, much less one that was predictable ahead of time, is insanely revisionist history.
