It's hardly just the Lakers series.

He can't do it against anybody, he has been a bad shooter in the paint as well as outside of it for the last 2.5 seasons - this is hardly a new development.

This isn't just me, this observation has been made many times at this point, Clutch, Cat, the national media. When you have a center who can't defend and ALSO can't shoot - who can't play with a defensive specialist in Thompson AND can't play with an offensive speicalist like Sheppard - the center is the roster imbalance.

    This.
I’m not sure why this is so hard to understand.
He doesn’t protect the paint… he is a poor shooter from the perimeter… he isn’t an efficient scorer… he cannot play with a lot of players.

It is like a lower level Kevin Love starter pack. At least Love at one point could score on the perimeter.

This is why after we get swept this series, Stone and Ime are going to offer up Sengun, FVV plus picks for Giannis to the Fertitas as the sacrifice needed to save their worthless jobs.

Where do you think Sengun was hiding this awful version of himself for the last few years?
You know, during his age 20, 21, and 22 seasons?

During the Summer, he was absolutely one of the best players in the world.
For the first 1/4 of the season he was playing 2nd team All-NBA level.
For the next 1/4 he played at an all-star level.
    Then came the injury.
He has a thing w/ personal accolades and stats and clearly rushed back.
How many times have we heard a Rocket injury assessment and then it's taken materially longer?
This was the opposite. He came back early. And he clearly wasn't ready.
He thought he was good enough to jake it on defense and still be a stud on offense but he's not that guy.
His athleticism is below avg on his best day and he underestimated how awful he would be on D and inefficient on O.

Then the last few weeks of the season he began to play like he did in the first 1/4. Then he tweaked his back again in that second to last regular season game.
    And here we are.

So you can believe that a 23 yr old - who dominated everything for 4 mnths - was actually much worse the entire time.
Or you can look at the chain of events, the incredible drop-off in play, his own remarks about being tired from having no Summer break and the obvious injury and grade him on a curve.

I'm as frustrated as anyone. I think he's taken a step back in playmaking b/c he's missing a ton of easy/obvious passes as he's trying to create more scoring opportunities for himself. His screens are so bad he shouldn't even waste time setting them. There are clear areas of regression. But damn y'all are something else.

We’re going with the injury angle again for Sengun now? I swear that’s the go-to when he plays like sh*t and embarrasses himself

Sengun lost in the 1st round then played like 3 weeks of Eurobasket. That’s enough to have you fatigued by early January? Because that’s when that excuse started popping up on here

you’d swear he was a 35 y/o that made a deep Finals run then played in the Olympics

TLDR: Dating back to the Summer, Alpi has played All-NBA ball 50% of the time and he's been anywhere from avg to awful the other 50% of the time. Given this chasm, I think the injury has a lot more to do w/ his performance than regression although there are areas of concern.

    I’m thinking Sengun/KD to NY for Towns/Anuoby?

    Towns
    Jabari
    OG
    Reed
    Amen

I'm not arguing to build around Sengun. Is Reed the offensive specialist actually helping out there? What is Amen the defensive specialist doing out there with the Lakers perimeter guys going off? Jabari is doing alright. Eason not so much. Where's the shooting? Where's the players reading and reacting out there?

This roster does not help Sengun or Amen.

    edit: wrong thread.

I don't know if they even have enough FRPs to adequately compensate us for that much bad salary

It would be interesting to see what this team would look like with four shooters around Amen though, and Amen/Anunoby is a great defensive 1-2 punch

The new lottery rules hurt Portland's leverage with holding the Bucks picks. Future draft picks no longer have the cache of the past. The Bucks royally screwed themselves trying to hang onto Giannis. They really need a miracle to be relevant any time in the next decade. I wonder how excited their fans are going to be with Jrue Holiday, Jerami Grant, and, maybe, Scoot. The Rockets should be paying attention to how the Bucks screwed themselves trying to hang onto Giannis.

In your mind, what is the difference between an excuse and an explanation?

But what if he sustains his level of play all season? Then it isn't an excuse, it's an explanation.

Maybe you believe he'll play poorly next season as well? He's maxed out and what you see is what you get? There is no more room for growth? If so, I think you might be right. We'll see.

In fairness to him, that post was made back in April. I did a double-take on it, too, and had to look.

What about when you have a point guard who can’t defense and ALSO can’t shoot - who can’t play with a defensive specialist in Mobley AND can’t play with an offensive specialist like Mitchell - the point guard is the roster imbalance.

But how tf is he your guys favorite player? @Nook
