I don't see Mobley being a primary playmaker or a primary scoring option, so I don't understand the point without already having that player on the roster.
I guess I’m in the minority, but I thought Mobley was pretty good in the playoffs and I’ve never been a big fan. I was on record for wanting to trade back with Toronto in that draft and getting the 4th and another pick in the mid-teens and getting Barnes and Sengun. We ended up getting Sengun later in the draft, anyway. However, I do think Mobley is a better fit for this team as a rim protector and I think it is more feasible he becomes a much better outside shooter than Sengun. I do not think 50m is atrocious for a stretch five who is only 25 years old. His motor is certainly a concern during the regular season, but it does not seem to be a problem in the playoffs. He is pretty weak and would have problems with big centers, but I see that as less of a concern in today’s NBA as opposed to lack of perimeter defense. I think this discussion is just for fun. No way Sengun is a fit in Cleveland and Stone orchestrating a decent 3 way trade is a remote possibility at best.
I just don't see Mobley as a center. He's a better rim protector than Jabari but otherwise has the same issue. Too skinny. And he's already in his mid-20s so I doubt that changes much at this point.
People here would be shocked by how little you can get for a wing who can't shoot but is nevertheless seeking a near-max rookie extension. A wing who can't shoot is a glaring weakness for a playoff team, and a non-All-Star looking for over $200M is not a target for a rebuilding team.
It’s a very valid point. Centers that are both “meaty” and can shoot from outside and adequately guard the perimeter are few and far between. It is the dilemma that guys like Wemby and Chet are creating. I think, unless Sengun develops a 3 pointer, girth may be the trade off we have to make or wait until another unicorn becomes available. I’m not really that opposed to running it back and hoping Amen or Sengun develop more skills, but it doesn’t make for very scintillating conversation.
GM’s and basketball management have to weigh not only past performance and cap considerations, but also have to factor potential and competition into the equation. I could be wrong, but I think Amen is a very hot commodity in the league and there are probably more than a half a dozen teams that would give a haul for him. He has super star potential with a shot and his improvement in form and FT shooting gives room for optimism from all but the most pessimistic (or impatient) of fans. Our society as a whole is more about immediate gratification. Waiting for a player to blossom is getting more and more difficult for GM’s. I suspect the Rockets will offer a much larger extension than the fans would like, but maybe something less than the max. Whether he accepts less than the max is the bigger question.
Nonsense - as in "does not make sense". Should Stone wait for Amen to "blossom"? Or will he give Amen "a much larger extension than the fans would like"? It sounds like you are telling fans, who are in essence fanatics, to be patient, while expecting Stone, the professional, to shower Amen with money before he has blossomed. Amen has had 3 years to blossom, but he actually took a step back last year. The patient thing would be to not extend him - that should be the play here.
That “If” is doing a lot of heavy lifting going into year 4. If anything, Amen’s 3PT shooting has regressed
I voted “yes” because Mobley is the more versatile offensive player but I wouldn’t do it because of his contract. Has nothing to do with Amen.
We’ll see if what I said is nonsense. You are notoriously pessimistic about young players and don’t seem to have much of a gauge on how the NBA works. Why do guys like Mobley, Banchero, and injury plagued guys get so much money? Potential and supply vs demand. In my opinion, Amen will be a max player either here or somewhere in the next 5 years. I don’t expect all fans to be patient, I’m just trying to predict likely outcomes. Don’t get me wrong, I hope the Rockets can extend Amen for Jabari, or even Sengun money, just don’t think they will be able to.
An Amen for Mobley thread turned into Sengun for Mobley thread when there's literally another thread on page 1 called Sengun for Mobley. As far as Amen fit on the cavs he could cover of the poor defense by the smaller Mitchell and help Harden. For return, Mobley's contract is high, maybe one of Cav's shooting wings instead + late draft compensation.
To the contrary, I think Sengun and Bari are excellent values on their current deals, and I'm excited to see what Reed will do after a summer in the weight room. As to "how the NBA works", a lot of stupid teams overvalue and overpay their own draftees because of the sunk cost fallacy. With the aprons and the new draft rules, stupid teams are going to look even worse going forward. Let's not be one of those teams. Other teams would not value Amen the same way we would because they haven't sunk any cost into him - they would see him for what he is, a wing who can't shoot. An objective approach is needed.
Mobley is the type of player who I’d look to pair with Sengun not replace him. if the Cavs can get LeBron he may want to play with Durant in his last year…. so maybe a Durant and Jabari for Mobley? FVV - Amen - Eason - Mobley - Sengun.
I probably want Durant gone more than anyone in the City of Houston. And even I wouldn't trade Durant for Evan Mobley. Let alone Reed Sheppard or Jabari Smith or Sengun. Amen wouldn't even come up in a conversation. Like trading Cooper Flagg for Mobley. Evan Mobley is an absolutely useless player.
Mobley the concept is always better than Mobley the player. You dont wanna have a 50M just giving you 18/8 dude I dont care if you think the defense is elite. Unless he is Wemby level out there you cant justify that kind of production on 32% of your cap. Just imagine you need to break 100 but 32% of your salary just gives you 18 pts. Thats a no bueno thats why Cavs already in the 2nd apron but also have very little depth. Cavs are honestly lucky they havent had major injuries so far.
Jabari is a much better shooter than Mobley, younger, and has a better frame for putting on muscle. The only reason to trade for Mobley is to replace Sengun not Jabari. I think Mobley is a much better defensive player than Sengun and has a better chance of developing an outside shot. I think he’s a better fit if we are building around Amen. I wouldn’t trade for Mobley if we were building around Mobley or building around Sengun. His contract is only a bit more than KD and he has way more room to grow and fits our team better. A 3 way that moves Sengun and KD and brings back Mobley other good young role players is the way to go, as long as we preserve the Nets pick in 27 and one of the 29 picks.
