I could get behind this. Anything that shifts the balance toward complete basketball players is a move in the right direction.
To me, a “non-shooter” is someone defenses will leave open and dare to take 3s. That is why virtually all of Amen’s 3s as listed as “wide open.” Conversely, the vast majority of Brown’s 3s are either “open” or “tight.” No one is sagging off Brown at the 3 point line.
Yeah that's why generalising the numbers to fit a narrative rarely flies. Brown's definitely not a "non-shooter" when the majority of his 3's are actually above league average. Visual aids for reference... Now, he's not a sniper, but if that's a "non-shooter" then outside of true sniper players, who is a shooter?
Exactly. I think there are about four categories of shooters. 1. The snipers. Steph, Kon, Ant, etc. Guys shooting 9+ 3s a game on .39 or better. These are the guys who can truly space the floor because defenders have to chase them around. 2. Solid shooters. They won’t space like snipers, but defenders won’t sag, either. Brown falls into this category. 3. Guys who can hit wide open threes. They don’t take a ton of 3s, and defenders can sag off a bit, but they can punish you if left totally open. Chet, Mobley last year, etc. 4. The non-shooters. Guys who defenders sag off and dare to take 3s. Amen and Sengun fall into this category at the moment.
Sengun is my favorite player on the Rockets, but if the team decides they need to make another big swing, and Alpi has to be the centerpiece of the trade, I’d MUCH rather trade for Jaylen Brown than Giannis. For age if for no other reason. I also think Brown is more versatile and could fit next to just about anyone. I also live in Boston, so having Sengun on the local team would be a great consolation prize if he ends up being traded. I also think Sengun could really blossom on the Celtics if that comes to pass.
I think Jaylen Brown is a better player than Sengun but his supermax contract scares me. I wouldn't deal Jabari, Reed, or more than a few 1st round picks. If we can bundle Sengun with DFS and/or Capela's contacts, I would do it.
Other coaches would utilize him better. Sengun has never been Udoka's boy. I think Sengun falling off midseason (thanks in part to playing summer league right up until the NBA season) didn't do him any favors, accentuating the bad (slowness, defense) while the good (passing, etc) was already being ignored. In any case, if Sengun played next to (a healthy) Tatum and the rest of that squad, of course he's thrive more than he does here.
Obviously Brown is not a non-shooter--anybody looking at his 3P volume could tell you that. He shoots more of them than KD, ffs. His problem is more that he is kind of an inefficient chucker. Turnover prone, not a good playmaker. Having the ball in his hands makes things easier for the defense. He's not really a "complete player" because he lacks that facilitating aspect to his game and will generally just throw up a bad shot instead of finding the open man. We're already familiar with this issue because we all complained about KD playing on the ball this season. KD manages to at least be efficient with it but has some of the same issues otherwise. Both players are better utilized off the ball, but both want to be the "top dog" on their team.
I really don’t know why Boston would blow it up. They will have Tatum back all year and at least a top 2 roster in the East. Unless JB is making a big stink, Boston would be stupid to take pennies on the dollar. About the only thing that makes any sense is JB for Giannis straight up or Sengun and a 3-4 frp’s. Hope to God, Stone isn’t that stupid.
The Rockets can roll KD into a deal for Brown, but it would cost them most of their draft capital. The Rockets could try to do a deal sending Sengun and Adams or DFS to the Celtics and maybe another piece for Brown. Keeping KD likely helps the Rockets more than keeping Sengun the next couple of years, and gives them the most flexibility because they have picks. Some of this probably depends on how they view adding Brown to the team impacts Sengun as a player. Ultimately - I don't see the Rockets making a deal for Brown if they are worried about the long term. Brown is going to be 30 years old and has nagging injury issues in the past. This is a win in the next few years type of move. So my guess is that they would move Sengun if the Celtics will do it, and keep KD around - with the idea that Brown and a healthy FVV alleviate some of the spacing issues. I still think that the Blazers will offer more than the Rockets will for Brown, and the Rockets would be better off being a third or fourth team and getting draft picks from a team like Portland to help the deal get complete. Brown/FVV/Sheppard is an excellent guard rotation -- but there are other holes, and I don't think it is enough to beat SA or OKC. Unless SA suffers a devastating injury or two, they are only going to get better. They have too many guys with extremely high upside and they have a lot of draft capital.
Boston is interested in Giannis. They also would be selling high on Jaylen Brown. The Celtics will not give Brown away, they know there are middling teams like Hou, Por and Atl that want a star and will pay what they want. However, also consider that Boston is likely a little uneasy paying Brown nearly $200,000,000 over the next three seasons.
That's fair, they do guard him which is valuable from a spacing standpoint. My concern is that he doesn't make enough of them
Brown is an interesting name, but with a lot of caveats. Just bringing him in depending on the cost/loss does not suddenly make us the favorites in the West. If you trade Alpi, who do you bring in to play Center? Adams and Capela are back-ups only given dependability and age. If this can be figured out, Alpi would like blossom in a Celts system. Not sure I'd like that from our perspective. If you trade KD, what assets do you have to attach to make this attractive to Boston? Could you bring in a third team like WAS that could send AD and young prospects/draft capital to BOS to make it worthwhile? Would KD accept a trade to his home team? Maybe a team like Minny would work if KD decides he'd play there. BL: If we could get JB for KD that could be a win depending what else we have to send out. I'm not opposed to a move for JB, just not sure I trust Stone/Ime to make the deal.
As they should be. As should any team be. I don't like being the guy s**tting on another's paycheck, but Brown and Tatum.......practically no player....they just aren't worth that kind of money. But we look like we need to do something big after these last two playoff flameouts. Acquire star players who can overcome the "mumble-coaching". Udoka: "Jaylen!" (signals Brown to come over) Jaylen: "What's up, coach?" Udoka: "Mumble mumble mumble...." Jaylen: "What?" Udoka: "(getting mad) Mumble mumble mumble!" Jaylen:
The Celtics want to sell high on Jaylen Brown because the Celtics are smart and they know Jaylen Brown is not nearly as good as his reputation or contract. Many, but not all, front offices know that too. Those with some analytical bent, like the Rockets and Celtics, are well aware of this. I'd guess 15 or 20 teams wouldn't touch Brown's contract with a ten foot pole. It's not a secret or controversial in analytical NBA circles. Don't need to re-hash it here. The Celtics are going to fleece one of the *other* front offices or owners, who'll think "Jaylen Brown wow, he's a star, we need to trade all our picks for him to make a splash". Probably Portland and their new owner, but maybe someone else. The Celtics want Giannis, so that means making a market for Jaylen Brown to get the pick haul they'd need. Hence they'll leak out teams that are fake "interested" that just happen to have lots of assets and some tenuous link to Jaylen Brown, like Atlanta where Brown grew up, or Houston because of Ime. This is Boston creating negotiating leverage with Portland or whoever their mark is. This is all happening right now because the Giannis trade negotiations are happening right now. Boston has no package without netting a third team to be their dupe.
