Many in the current generation were caught off guard. I believe more are now aware of this danger. Hopefully, the upcoming generations won’t be as easily duped. I teach my kids to be very mindful of the content they encounter online—be it searches, YouTube, etc. (and how social media alg are designed to keep their attention by pushing more extreme contents to keep them engage) They shouldn’t just accept or trust it by default.

I live in fifth ward. I walked into the Walgreens and noticed the atm was no longer there.u asked the clerk and she said someone stole it.

I don't know the situation now but Walgreens had a very high credit rating 20 years ago. Typing that and thinking when I was working in credit has been a while, I'm getting old

Anyway Walgreens does take care of it's employees. I had a friend who worked at their distribution center and it paid well and my father who pass last month had a lodge brother who was a firefighter used to talk about his friend's wife very prosperous retirement from Walgreens, my father did taxes. She was clerk

I don't get why people shop a Walgreens, them and CVS has ridiculous prices. Speaking of my father, photography was a hobby of his and he developed pictures at Walgreens.Developing pictures, another I'm getting old reminder.

He was a member of there deals club whatever it's called. I went into Walgreens to get cash back, I would be some $.50 candy, otherwise I would never go in there

That happens more often than you might think.

The problem with them being by the front door is you can break the glass, run a heavy chain in anchored to a truck and attach it around the atm and drive off, dragging the atm out of the store behind you.

Sometimes you walk into a CVS or a Walgreens, and the atm is way at the back by the pharmacy. They had to start doing this in "high risk" neighborhoods because so many were getting stolen.

Some places bolt them into the concrete in the floor. I worked at a bar a long time ago and someone over time tried to steal it twice by that method. They failed both times because of that. The owner still took the atm away though because of the damage and annoyance.

I have actually sunk the bolts on those ATMs in the past. You can get a $200 Bosch hammer drills from like Lowes or Home Depot with a new bit and it goes through concrete floors like a knife through butter. I can drill 4 bolt holes in about 5-10 minutes with minimal effort. Conversely, the first few times I tried it with cheap consumer-grade "hammer" drills (not knowing any better), it was basically a full day job followed by total exhaustion. The right tool makes a difference.

As far as the actual robbing, the most effective MO at the heyday was to steal a big ol' "dualy" pickup like an F350 to do the pulling. If you try and yank an ATM out with your Nissan Leaf, you probably aren't going to succeed.

On the bank atms, they'd attach a hook to the front vault door of the ATM and just drag on the chain with the truck until it pulled the door off. I've seen full size bank drive up ATM's completely yanked out of the ground, all four anchor bolts sheared off, and the ATM dragged a couple of hundred feet across a parking lot. For the thieves, on large bank ATM's that indicates failure, because once the anchors sheer off, there's nothing left to pull against to rip the door off. Those big heavy duty pickups can generate a whole lot of torque. That's why every big bank ATM you see these days has a metal bar across the front that wasn't there a few years ago - it prevents the "hook and chain" attacks. Many banks also have GPS trackers inside the ATM's these days.

I could go on at length, but I'm sure nobody cares.

That’s insane. The risks people will take. I wonder how much a full ATM has in it anyways.

When I was anchoring all of the wood shelving/work benches to the floor in the barndominium, the first 4 holes were no problem. It was the other 45 that got a bit tiresome.
