Looks like Caserio/Ryans have found their center. Loved watching him pull and be able to hit moving targets on those run plays. Didn't mess up one snap and only one false start in all of that video. Not bad for a newby at the position.
It is entirely possible the Texans don't really know where they intend to use Rutledge right off the bat. It is not certain they are just withholding anything more than their initial practice schedules. And this isn't likely to change before he's taking snaps against pro defenders and they can evaluate what is teachable and what is not. Like can he get good at shotgun snaps while coordinating OL protection schemes? You can see potential from limited samples, but not consistency.
Love the attitude! I hope we've found our center for the next decade and a guy that can be All-Pro. Big Red can be the bad mfkr we've needed in the IOL, along with our other new vets we're looking to be much improved!!
I think if they develop him as the center, he'll stay there. Unless he's more natural at guard and/or Nwaiwu looks better at center. With current roster, his best shot at starting is C, but in 1-2 years if Teller goes they could move him there and Nwaiwu to the pivot. The other factor is injuries can force us to shift folks around as well. Needless to say, I'm glad we drafted those 2 guys because they give us some flexibility for the IOL.
It’s interesting that people always seem to take Centers and Guards for granted on the offensive line. Nevertheless, without a good center or guards, the whole protection scheme falls apart. The Left Tackles always seem to get the purse of the money and all the accolades. But we saw with Tunsil, if the line is broken, even an all-pro can’t do anything to make it successful. If Rutledge can solidify any of those 3 spots, it would be awesome! I am excited about Rutledge, with his tenacious attitude, it figures he will exponentially help the line getting to its goal of being one of the best in the NFL. If the line is a top 10 line, it will be a huge win for the Texans. As for most of their history in existence, they’ve been haunted by the Tony Boseli fiasco, waiting for help that never comes.
Quoted for truth. They definitely drafted a certain type of IOL. Big tough barroom brawlers that can move.
My offensive line coach in college would say put in a phone booth and beat the hell out of em. That reference would not work these days but oh well, I haven’t been even able to shed that saying. This seems like the type of players they are looking and hoping for.
https://draftwire.usatoday.com/stor...he-best-centers-to-the-worst-wrs/73449048007/ I was researching the success rate of guards in the first round history. I found an interesting article. Centers and Guards have the highest hit rates in the first round. Centers take the cake in hit rates in the 92%. Guards are actually #3 in first-round hit rates at 50%. OT are on #2 at 59%…. So the odds of finding a successful starter at Center, OT, or Guard are amongst the best when drafting in the 1st round. The worst hit rates are actually WR, the position everyone gets most excited about! But when you hit on WR, that’s a difference maker of enormous impact; problem is team fail at almost a 75% clip.
