Juan Sierra hit his 5th home run of the year for Fayetteville. Nick Potter allowed a run on a wild pitch, a hit, walked three, and struck out five in four innings. Kellan Oakes got the final five innings, and he turned in a scoreless outing, allowing three hits and striking out six.
I don't know if this has been posted but MLBpipeline have updated their top 100 due to recent graduates and now the Astros have 2 on the list!!! Kevin Alvarez is up to #80 Xavier Neyens enters at #100
Probably the nicest thing about that is that both of those guys are at least 2 years away from graduating, probabiy 3 or 4. So as long as they don’t fall apart or get traded, the “Houston has a terrible farm system” talk should die down a bit, even if the Astros don’t add big prospects at the deadline or draft.
FCL Astros cannot be stopped. Came back from a 5-0 deficit to walk it off in the 7th on a Kenni Gomez triple to go to 7-0.
Javier Perez threw eight shutout innings for Fayetteville, allowing three hits and striking out seven. He threw 67 pitches (52 strikes).
So how is he defensively? I mean he's got 18 HRs in 40 games at A+. If he can keep that up and can play defense, that's something for us to get excited about IRT minors catchers.
Nobody should be getting too excited about Jason Schiavone. He has certainly put himself on the map as a legitimate prospect, but 23 year olds with a >30% k rate in High A have an exceptionally poor track record. An extremely good outcome for him offensively would be someone like Griffin Conine. But really there is a 90%+ chance he will never be a significant contributor in the major leagues.
Jase Mitchell is 0-10 in his first 6+ games as a pro (today is his 7th game played), but he’s drawn 12 walks.
Waner Luciano is apparently pitching now? He’s thrown 2.1 innings today and allowed a run on two hits in the FCL game.
Juan Rojas sure does have my eyebrows raised in the extremely early going. 6’1” 180 18 year old IF with a near 3:1 bb:k ratio and .833 SLG?
Jason Schiavone is 5-5. Incredibly, none of the five hits are home runs. Asheville is currently winning 20-1.
They’re at 23 runs thru 6. The record for runs in a game by a stateside minor league team is 29. Record across all minors is 38, scored by a DSL team in 2019.
Big night for Yamal Encarnacion in Corpus as he finished 3-3 with a solo homer (3), 4 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. He also walked twice, so he reached in all of his plate appearances tonight. With 3 homers this year, Encarnacion has matched his career high in home runs, which he did in 89 games in 2024.
