would love Morey and NN back. Sign them as a packaged deal. Boom…our GM and HC problems are over. Nice pipe dream.
Morey sinking so much money into what was left of Paul George was inexplicable. Chasing stars is one thing. But not if they're broken down and can only give you occasional hints of that original cherry high. It was almost as bad as when as our GM kept "building around" a hobbling "Yao Ming".
he’s not perfect, no doubt. But I think he’s a much better player evaluator than Stone. Look at how he was able to scoop up Maxey late. Our front office hasn’t been able to do something like that. I couldn’t understand the Paul George contract, but I guess he was stuck with an injured Embid and gambled on a small window. His star chasing at the expense of building through the draft was my least favorite thing about Morey. But I still think he’s a much better GM than Stone and Patrick. It’s a moot point as he ‘ll never come back to work for Tilman.
The signing of Paul George to that enormous contract was close to the dumbest move I’ve ever seen a GM make. It was even more damaging than the WB/CP3 fiasco here to the 76ers. Morey is extremely overrated by many on this board.
...after the draft lottery last night, maybe it's time to appreciate that we never ever had Thabeet, Wiseman, Bennett level disasters of a pick.
I'm surprised sometimes by just how much autonomy given these GMs / president of basketball ops / whatever they're called. You'd think the owner would have enough basketball acumen before signing off to sit across from his / her employee and ask, incredulously, "Paul George? Paul George? Hold on a second." (looks at wikipedia) "What, so he had one full season last year and we're going to ignore the 140 some-odd games he missed the four seasons before that? Almost half a season for four seasons?" "Yup."
Morey's problem is that he believes if you collect enough talent you will automatically win. He ignores the human side of sports, things like character, chemistry, fit/role, ego, trust, etc. It's puzzling that as such a guy who crunches objective data he somehow doesn't seem to be aware that star players decline in age. Chasing over the hill superstars became his obsession, from Dwight to Melo to Harden to PG13. He kept getting burned by it.
This. Commentators on TV who were NBA players stated at one time during the season that the Rockets did not need a PG since Ime's offense is give the ball to KD or Alpi and let them initiate the offense. What good is a PG when all he has to do is dribble the ball up the court and hand it to either of those players. In fact, that was what FVV did most of the previous season. He dribbled the ball and handed it to Sengun or Jalen. He only did the PG thing when the defense stymied the two main offensive players, but it was almost bailout time when FVV got the ball back. The problem is not lack of a PG, it is the offensive system or lack thereof.
For all of the more than a decade of Morey hype and worship, he never even had the Rockets reach the NBA Finals. He lucked out on Harden and that was that. He has also failed in Philly, so why should the Rockets have him back.
morey has been awful as the philly gm outside of getting maxey; traded mccain for peanuts, those embiid and pg13 contracts are so bad. Here's all his other movies:
Why the heck would the Rockets or any fans want Morey back? His time here was a failure and his successor is even worst so far. Lets try and get someone better.
Stone at least understand the human element of baskeball Morey never did and it's why Morey will never win anything in the NBA
