I've been a Roon customer for ten years or so, and have known the founders for 20+ years. it's a great system if you a) care about sound quality, b) have a local library, c) have a multi-room system, and d) said system is heterogeneous in its device make-up. It is not that complicated to set up, and most of the time, it works flawlessly. but sometimes it doesn't, so there is a community that can help you trouble shoot. if you ever used a squeezebox, or other networked audio setup, it's prety straightforward. in my system, I run the Core (server) on a dedicated NUC with external storage. The NUC is connected to a switch, which is connected to my router. Controllers are my phone, laptop, and iPad, each has an app. Endpoints are: -Gold Note DS-10 (streaming DAC) -Silent Angel M1T (streaming transport only, outputs to a DAC via USB) -Bluesound M10 (Streaming amplifier) -Cabasse Pearl (Streaming sub/sat system) I have a local library, and subscribe to Tidal and Qobuz, and Roon integrates all three in a seamless experience.
Forgot to mention multi-room. Also, @basso, we now have roon arc so you can listen on the road as well. Not sure what you mean about heterogeneous device make-up. I have roon server and HQPlayer on a sonic orbiter then 1) optical rendu > holo audio may KTE > sanders mag tech amp > vintage Maggie’s. 2) to pair of KEF w50 wireless 3)4) to a couple of Sonos zones. Hardly heterogeneous…
hardly homogeneous. your system is very hetero. which Maggies do you have? i have a pair of 2.5's a long time ago, when i had the room for them.
Yes, but why is that necessary? Seems homogenous would be better if one cared about grouping zones ( I don't )
it's not necessary, it's a beneficial feature of Roon. allows you to use different endpoints in different systems. Bluesound, or Sonos, require you to use only their devices in a multiroom system. w/ Roon, you can mix and match as desired.
I took most of my CDs to goodwill years ago (without ripping any of them). I have a few left, and I kept the few SACDs I accumulated ( I think…..might need to go check on that for sure). I’ve bought a few records here and there (more for nostalgia than anything else). Point is, I’ve succumbed to streaming music just like most people, and honestly, it sounds pretty to good to my ancient and crappy ears. Kinda have some buyers remorse for that T8 and the SSD I bought for it. …..but it does sound good…
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
nothing really does (that I’ve found) but screen casting the T8 on my iPhone is far superior to streaming from an iPad and trying to control it from my phone. And it sounds better. Or maybe it’s the audiophile placebo effect like with six figure cables. Anyhoo, here’s a song so I’m “on topic.”
