I said this in another thread, but a thing I can totally see happening is: We end up trading Sengun to a smarter, more modern organization, they make him developing his three point shot priority #1A, then within a year or two he's taking 5 a game at 36% and averaging 24, 10, and 7 on higher efficiency. To be clear, even if he does that, he's still not quite at Jokic's level, but at least he's much easier to build a roster around and clearly good enough to be one of the two best players on a championship team.
it was bad, sad to say this after such a long rebuild, but we have to make sure its written and not forgotten. This guy proved he cant be the #1 option with this roster set up.
Absolutely. I would even throw in a good first round pick and a pick swap or something along those lines to get it done. Tatum, if he can get back to 100% of what he was, fixes this team. I could believe in building around a Tatum/Amen #1 and #2. Pop in a starting caliber stretch 5 (maybe trade KD for one?) and we're ready to rock. I don't think Boston does it though, sadly.
I would trade those two for Tatum or Brown at this point. Either of those guys could be a 1A on a championship level team.
Probably not, because of injury concerns and his astronomical salary. If you could trade KD, Sengun and 27 Phoenix draft pick for Tatum, Garza, Gonzales would work in the trade machine, I’d definitely consider it. Then look to steal Ware and Wiggins from Miami for FVV and the 29 Dallas pick. Amen, Tatum, Wiggins, Jabari, Ware is stout defense with 4 3 pt shooters. Tatum is only 28. You would still have the 27 Nets pick and 29 Phx pick and all your own picks going forward. You would still need to work on your bench, especially at guard, but Reed, re-signed Tari, Adams OR Capella is a decent start. Miami might require another pick for Ware.
It could be a good trade for both teams...Boston desperately needs an Inside presence when 3pt shots aren't going in. We get a true young Superstar that we can build around and the offense doesn't have to go through KD anymore.
Funny this is brought up considering how many fans laughed at a potential Jalen Green for Jaylen Brown trade a while back.
I will admit Brown is better as a #1 option than I thought he'd be. I think our own prospects have also lost some of their luster since none of them has had a true, massive breakout season.
I think that's literally the first time that ever happened in his entire career though? And they took the reigning champion OKC Thunder to 7 games last season. I think it's just a combo of Minnesota being a terrible matchup for them and his Jokic's roster being too weak--to many overpaid, not-good-enough roleplayers. If Sengun could shoot the three ball like Jokic does there would be nothing wrong with his archetype IMO, you can compensate for him being an average defensive center, which I think he is when he locks in. His biggest issue is just that he's not good enough at scoring in general to be a #1 as he is now (and that includes the lack of a reliable three point shot). You can only live with the difficulty of building a good defense around him if he's an elite offensive player, and he's just not so far.
I think its just worth noting that not every young player is untouchable and not every non-Rocket is somehow overrated. Just because a person prefer having a player not on the Rockets roster doesnt mean we arent Rockets fans. This is yet another 1st round exit team. Unless they improve, its just another round of JVG Rockets all over again.
Jokic won a championship in 22-23 and has been all over, from first round loss to conference finals over the last 8 years. Let's not invent false narratives.
I get it but that archetype has mostly failed in the NBA. Jokic is the lone exception. Turning Alpy into Jokic is like saying lets just turn Reed into Curry.
I love Sengun. I think he is a great person, I think he’s a great teammate and he is the true OG of the rebuild. I definitely think that we have shorted him in regards to tweaking an offensive system around his unique skills. that being said, some of his shortcomings are his own. I don’t believe him to be a center. And I think that you really have to be cognizant in how you build your team around him. And I just don’t know if we are creative enough as an organization to do that with both him and Thompson. and even if we were creative us, it might just not be possible. As I’ve said in a few different threads, we just have way too many players that need to operate in the mid range area. Sengun or Durant have to go. Even FVV, while he will help to bring stability to the offense is often dependent on taking the mid range jumper if the actions fail. same for Smith. we need to diversify into more players that can get to the rim and finish or kick out. Or just guys that can hit the three-pointer
Alpi is not close to Jokic and probably never will be. That being said, he could be a #2 or #3 with the right system around him. Never will happen with Udicker though, might as well trade him. At least we'll get rid of excuses so next time he flames out there will be none remaining.
