Why is that a reasonable comparison though — percentage of net worth in one case versus percentage of income in the other. I don’t think the portion of net worth that is equity in major active companies can be treated on the same scale. I think charity relative to personal expenditure would be a more accurate metric.
It’s actually not a fair comparison. 2% of income comes straight out of money meant for rent, food, and bills, with no real buffer for something like a medical emergency or cancer. That kind of giving cuts into someone’s safety and livelihood in a real way. Meanwhile, 0.9% of a billionaire’s net worth doesn't touches their security or lifestyle. Even if they gave away 90% of their net worth, they would still be safe and secure. So even though 2% is higher than 0.9% on paper, the real-world sacrifice is nowhere close. But you have to start somewhere, so I get why the author framed it that way.
