this is false. EV charging is still cheaper. Unless youre driving some shitty little car and then maybe, if electric prices are higher than normal and gas prices are lower, then its on par.

but yes, the amount of available charging stations is an issue that improves daily

I just plugged into AI how much money I've spent on gas over the lifetime of my 10yo ICE SUV. I gave it all the variables.

It said I've probably spent nearly $14,000 on gas consuming well over 4,000 gallons. For context, that is half a tanker truck of gas that I lit on fire and went up in smoke.

Conversely, if I had an EV, the electrical cost in Texas would have been roughly $3,200 over the same period. Plus at the end, I can recycle the car battery as opposed to lighting it on fire.

If over 10 years, I can estimate that I'd save roughly $10,000 on gas, I can justify investing that now to buy solar panels. Now I can pocket that $3,200 that I'd otherwise have spent on electricity.

I think I just talked myself into buying an EV. lol

    -----
EDIT: I just asked the AI about maintenance costs over 10 years.

It estimated I probably spent $8-10,000 on maintenance on my car over the past 10 years. It predicated, if I had a Tesla Model 3, I would spend probably $3-6,000 since EVs are much simpler. (It did add the caveat that the cost to replace the battery significantly changes that math.)

Very true. Having the charger where you park at home (garage or driveway) is what makes the difference.

The discussion here on charging at home vs. going to the gas station has completely gone off the rails. SMH.

I'm saying if you rely 100% on superchargers, the cost is comparable to gas and you have to go more often and it takes longer when you're there. It's a losing proposition all around.

I put that into ChatGPT and it confirmed this. It might be $2-3,000 cheaper if using only superchargers, at best, or it's just a break even.

So yea, the real savings come if you are charging at home. But EVs are cheaper to maintain, by half.

So if you are in an apartment, at worst, you won't lose money with an EV but you'll probably save a few hundred bucks annually (or more).

The question to ChatGPT was over 10 years. Even at 30 months, most ICE vehicle maint is negligible. Just oil changes. I'd imagine many of the larger costs start to creep in at about year 4/5. That's when you need to change tires, breaks, fluids, etc. But my point was, and you are confirming, that EV maintenance is much less than ICE.

Rivian's R2 SUV has got my attention but I did not put a deposit down and probably won't get my hands on one until 2027. The only way I get one earlier is if a used one hits the market.

I wish my car was as cool as Tommy's! Nothing wrong with the ICE cars we have now but it would be nice to get an EV to eliminate the need for gas pumping for my daily commute. It's also a little worrisome with the continued increase in gas prices but this is a long play and I'm not looking for savings but just an alternate form of transportation. I keep my cars forever (2011 and 2013) so the EV will probably replace my oldest ICE car.

longest EV battery warranty is 10 years. The range will erode yearly.

Sunk Car Fallacy. Who really keeps their vehicles for 10 years?

the guy I quoted, I figured he might want to know an EV will likely be mechanically totaled if he keeps it as long as he did his current cars.

Understood. It'll just be one of the factors I'll have to consider. My gf used to have a Prius and we had to swap out the hybrid battery with a rebuilt/refurbished one after about 10 years.

I made the transition last fall. Picked up a Macan 4 EV. I have a lvl 2 charger installed at home.

I’ve average about 40-60 dollars per month for charging. Hardly used DCFC since I mainly charge at home.

My Toyota Corolla has become my airport car and I currently in the process of selling my 2008 Mazdaspeed 3.

This is a totally different ballgame with regards to cost. Prius is a tank that is cheap to maintain and repair and keeps it's value relative to the repair costs.

    EV will be worthless
