Look at other career arcs for some elite guards of a similar size.

Jalen Brunson -- career turned the corner at age 25 and became a star at age 26
Steve Nash -- career turned the corner at age 26 and became a star at age 30
John Stockton -- career turned the corner at age 25 and became a star that year

Reed Sheppard is 21 years old.

That probably speaks more to the Rockets' need for an actual PG than it does to anything Reed is doing. And I'm not saying that to put Reed down, but this team just works better when you have an actual PG controlling the game rather than letting Amen or KD or whoever fill that role. And it's why Stone doing nothing at the deadline to even bring in a minimum salary PG was so egregious, because we all knew it was a problem.

We've become so impatient because most players enter the league at such a young age. A player's prime years are generally between 27-31. That's basically their third contract. And because of NBA economics, people feel like if they have a keeper on a rookie contract, they are going to need to give them the max on the second contract in order to keep them. It creates some unreal expectations for many of these players and they aren't allowed to progress and grow naturally.

From a financial point of view you are absolutely correct!!

NOW, lets look at it from the talent/skill point of view...
Several posters have said that "it depends on what we are getting back in return", how, how, how can you judge now what would be fair or above fair value for him? HYPOTHETICALY speaking, lets say we do get a great player in return if we trade him, but Reed ends up surpassing all our expectations and in 5-10yrs he really is playing like one of the all-time great PG's that have been brought up in this thread (Curry, Nash, Stockton). If we trade him AND we win at least 2 championships with our "NEW" great player then it would've been worth it IMHO regardless of what Reed ends up being, BUT If we don't win any chips and Reed end up being a small GOAT (not THE Goat) there will be many people on this board who will need counseling!!!

I wouldn't trade ANY of our young core (Alpi, Amen, Reed, Bari) before getting rid of our idiot coach!! THERE I said it....

FYI... I'm not saying he will be the next Curry/Nash/Stockton, but I do see real potential in him!!

True dat. And this isn't like Jalen Green who was basically the same player his first 4 seasons, while some desperately hoped for some magical moment of intervention in year 5.

Reed has made drastic improvements since his rookie season, and has even found his confidence in the post season as the series has progressed. He needs to get a bit better at drawing contact so he can at least occasionally get to the FT line, but otherwise he's making great strides to be a future all star down the road.

The Reed hate on this board is really weird. He is 19. Would be a junior at Kentucky. He is a baby, a boy playing with men. The potential is there. Give him a couple more years of development and then make a judgment. I see enormous potential. Look how Smith is coming around. And I really like Shogun and think he will be one of the league's best centers. AND, Amen better not be going anywhere. I even think Tara is a unique talent. He just needs to stay healthy and become more consistent.

He's not Jalen Green, we can admit that he's 21.

Ask Cuban if he regrets trading Nash.........

That is what Reed could become.

It's funny how people let a few games shape their narrative. If Houston loses game 6 and Reed struggles I'm assuming the narrative will flip back to we should explore trading him?

I dont agree with them but we need to stop calling everything hate. For instance I hate KD and Ive been angry since we traded for him. I hate Ime for insisting Stone get him and I am angry at Stone for being Ime's lap dog. THATS HATE.

I however cant blame anyone for saying Reed has been trash when he kind of has. Keep in mind we were hoping he, Amen and Jabari would be stars as they are all top 3 picks and it doesnt look likely any of them will be. I think we need to give him more of a chance but I cant blame the people who want to trade him given how he's played.

I feel for you if you thought Reed would become an elite guard in two years with limited playing time.
