I actually think it’s plausible that the SPLC strategy of paying these informants was counterproductive to their stated aims. It’s at least debatable whether the benefits of monitoring these groups from the inside
outweighed the financial support for individuals to retain a role, sometimes significant, in those groups. If someone was donating to the SPLC over the years with a genuine interest in fighting back against these groups, it’s understandable they’d be unhappy with this program (even if the percentage that goes to it is very small).

That would be an interesting thing to talk about out, rather than this invented conspiracy theory that the entire thing was staged. That’s a clear overreach given was is actually being alleged in the indictment.
