Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios have premiered the first trailer for the “Clayface” film based on the villain character from the Batman comics.

More specifically, the film is a standalone body-horror thriller penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, and partly inspired by the 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series” two-part episode ‘Feat of Clay’.

Set within the DC Universe, Tom Rhys Harries stars in the film as Matt Hagen/Clayface with Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, David Dencik and Eddie Marsan in supporting roles.

The story follows an actor named Matt Hagen who was disfigured in a car crash. He’s offered a supply of experimental face cream, allowing him to transform his face for short periods into whatever appearance he wants.

He ultimately mutates into a walking creature of clay who can shapeshift into anyone at will, and he sets out for revenge.

James Watkins directs the film, which cost around $40 million and is slated to open in cinemas on October 23rd.

Unless this is the Clayface from Harley Quinn, I'm not interested.

This trailer doesn't give off the same vibes as Harley Quinn Clayface.

That versiin of Clayface is Alan Tudyk being Alan Tudyk. I'm not a big comic guy, but I don't think that Clayface bears any resemblance to any other version of Clayface from DC.

The first thing this trailer made me think of -

Making everything dark and gritty and super serious and melodramatic has jumped the shark for me at this point. Maybe the rest of you still love it.

if I remember correctly, he is going to be a villain in the next Batman movie correct? so I guess this is essentially setting that up?

Is DC just going to continue with this completely separate Batman universe? It may be the best route to just make self contained stories than try to make everything connect like the MCU. At some point it hurts the product and fans stop paying attention to the actual story and start looking for ties to future movies, teamups, etc.

The Batman movie was really good and actually exceeded my expectations.

The Penguin was also superb and exceeded expectations wildly. one of my favorites of all time.

There is a lot they could do off to the side as well like a Paul Dano Riddler series.

From talking with a friend who has way more interest in comic book movies than I do (especially DC), he said there have been several Clayfaces through comicdom. He said this one sounds like a cross between 1950s Clayface (Matt Hagen) and maybe another with horror levels amp'ed up. He said the 90's cartoon was more of a combination of several different Clayfaces throughout comic book history (there are about 7-9 Clayfaces throughout comic book history that go back to 1940, apparently). The 1940s Clayface was during the early "pre-code horror" years of comics, and I'm guessing he was more horror-related (?), but the 1950s Matt Hagen character was more sci-fi (?) - not sure. Can't remember what else he said about that.

No, everything I've read suggests it will likely be the villain named Hush. It's someone from Bruce's past who knows him well. They're very tight-lipped, but it's my understanding that Clayface is set in a separate DC Universe...the one where Batman interacts with other super heroes...different from Matt Reeves' stuff.

Clayface is the DCU with Superman, Supergirl, Lobo, etc. The ‘The Batman’ movies (and Penguin) are separate.

This is among the nerdiest conversations I’ve ever participated in…but I loved The Batman so much and sincerely can’t wait for the sequel
