Lakers in "playoff mode," Rockets in "slow/lost" mode. Note to Shepherd's agent: get him out of here. The coach hates him.

    Here's what GPT gave me:

He cannot ensure a win, but he can give Houston a much better shot in Game 3.

The immediate context is clear: the Lakers won Game 1, 107-98, then Game 2, 101-94, so Houston is down 2-0 heading home for Game 3 on Friday, April 24. In Game 1, L.A. shot 60.6% from the field and 52.6% from three despite missing key scorers. In Game 2, Houston again lost the possession battle with shaky ball security and went just 7-for-29 from three, while Kevin Durant returned but had nine turnovers.

If I were Udoka, I’d center the prep around five things:

    1. Make the Lakers’ role players prove it again — but differently.
The killer in the first two games was not just LeBron. Kennard exploded for 27 in Game 1, then Kennard and Marcus Smart combined for 48 in Game 2. Houston cannot keep giving clean catch-and-shoot rhythm looks to secondary creators. I’d top-lock shooters more often, trail tighter off pindowns, and switch more selectively so LeBron sees crowds without easy kickout timing.

    2. Clean up Durant’s usage so he attacks, not over-dribbles.
Durant had 23 in Game 2, but the nine turnovers are the bigger story. I’d get him more touches at the elbow and nail, with quicker decisions: shoot, one-dribble pull-up, or immediate swing. Fewer high, static isolations; more screening actions with Sengun so Durant catches on the move and the help has to rotate instead of sit on him.

    3. Re-center the offense through Sengun as a hub.
Sengun gave them 20 and 11 in Game 2 and was productive in the opener too. Houston should use him more as a trigger point for dribble handoffs, short-roll playmaking, and high-low action with cutters like Amen Thompson. That does two things: it reduces live-ball turnovers and forces Ayton/L.A.’s back line to defend decisions instead of loading up on Durant.

    4. Win the first 8 minutes with pace and force.
Houston does not need chaos, but it does need easier offense. Even before the playoffs, Udoka had said he wanted the Rockets to play faster. At home, I’d push after every miss, hunt early seals for Sengun, and let Amen attack before the Lakers set their shell. The goal is not just tempo for tempo’s sake; it is to stop every half-court trip from becoming a LeBron-controlled read-the-floor possession on the other end.

    5. Make LeBron work on every possession.
LeBron had 19 and 13 assists in Game 1, then 28-8-7 in Game 2. You probably are not shutting him down, so the adjustment is cumulative wear: involve him in screening actions, force cross-matches in transition, and keep changing the primary defender between Amen, Jabari, and bigger help stunts. The objective is to tax his legs and shrink his late-game control.

My Game 3 blueprint for Houston would be this:

    • Start with Durant–Sengun two-man actions.
    • Use Amen as an on-ball downhill weapon, not just a spacer.
    • Stay home harder on Kennard/Smart.
    • Treat turnovers as the series swing stat.
    • Try to get to halftime with a lead so the crowd can matter.
The blunt version: Houston does not need a genius reinvention. It needs fewer empty possessions, better shooter discipline, and a more structured Durant/Sengun offense. If the Rockets cut the turnovers sharply and hold Lakers role players closer to normal output, they can absolutely take Game 3.

I can also break this down into a quarter-by-quarter Game 3 plan like Udoka’s pregame whiteboard.

I apologize if I misunderstood - Do I think the style of play that FVV plays could be holding back guys like Thompson and Sheppard? Yes, they are better in the open court. Do I believe that FVV is better than no one? Absolutely he is better than no one, he at least defends, protects the ball and will move the ball when everyone is nervous. The Rockets are better with FVV than without for sure.

The lack of development from the massive amount of draft picks certainly doesn't put Stone in a good light, but that is an organizational failure as well -- from Stone, to Silas and now Udoka and the assistant coaches and scouts.

KD missing the first game set the tone of the series. You can always count on the Rockets to underachieve each year.

    Right.

1.Stephen Silas... nothing else needs to be said.
    2. Udoka 1st year .500 record... this was overhyped young guys growing up regardless.
    3. Ime 2nd year... big improvement and got 2nd seed but lost to a 7th seed smh
    4. Ime this year down 0-2 to a 41 year old led LeBron Lakers coached by JJ Redick... gotta change that it's too ridiculous.

Note to KD: please don't pass unless target teammate is wide open. Just shoot. Missed shots are our best offense.

I've lived through the Silas years and some serious lows before in my 20 years of following, but has got to be the worst season and most underachieving team I've witnessed of any of those teams. Also never been more indifferent to the outcome of games and disgusted at whatever our offense is supposed to be.

Rockets played the tanking game, played the lottery. Got some “solid” pieces, but no stars out of that strategy by not lucking into a #1 pick or lucking into a star at a lower pick (instead drafting the likes of Green, Jabari, Amen, Sheppard). Is what it is. Now their playing cards are future draft picks and tradable contracts, or “hoping” a coaching change can get more out of the current group.

No franchise players out of any of our draft picks. Jalen no, sengun no, Jabari no, tari no, reed no, Amen no.

You can't win when none of your players ascend

A lot of spin in there to try to negate....." The Rockets are better with FVV than without for sure."

Stone had the picks for Green (lucky not an OKC pick), JSJ, Amen, and the 30th pick in the 2025 draft to start through the 2026 draft.

Stone turned Harden, those 4 picks, Covington, Westbrook, PJ Tucker, and Gordon into Durant, JSJ, Amen, Reed, Tari, Sengun, a 2027 Brooklyn pick, a chance to swap with Phoenix in 2027, a 2029 Phoenix pick, and a chance to swap in 2029 with Dallas. I don't think the team is complete, but it's been since Luhnow that I've seen a Houston GM get slammed this much for amassing a massive number of draft picks and prospects.

Not really when you consider the context - because I don't think that FVV is ideal. I think that the ideal point guard for the Rockets can run the floor and create for others. FVV doesn't do either of those things well, and that limits guys like Amen and Sheppard and Eason, all of whom are best in the open court. If FVV better than what they currently have? Absolutely, he does defend well and protect the ball well.

    Stone has had.... #2, #3, #4, #3, #10, #16, #17, #20, #23, #24 and #29 over the last 4 years.

Stone had $60,000,000 in cap space as well.

He has managed to turn that into: Sengun, Thompson, Sheppard and Smith in the draft.

He has turned the $60,000,000 into a 37 year old injury prone Kevin Durant, a 32 year old FVV, a 32 year old injury prone Adams and a 33 year old DFS.

He also traded away the Nets 2026 first rounder - in the best draft in years and also lost the 2029 Nets pick

Going forward the #5 seed Rockets have the #8 seed Suns pick in 2027 and 2029.

The Rockets do not have any Nets first round picks....... just the two Suns picks

The Rockets do have a swap in a few years with the Mavericks, which likely has limited value as Cooper Flagg will be likely hitting his stride.

So - all told, the Rockets are now +1 in future first rounders, and a potential swap..... that is it.

This is where you are dead wrong.

I don't know anyone that is slamming the Rockets for amassing a huge number of draft picks or prospects.

The issue is that he has spent an enormous amount of draft capital and cap space and has a team that has limited upside and cannot get past the first round of the playoffs.

Also, there isn't really a lot of draft capital left --- they are only +1 on the amount of 1st rounders that they would normally have going forward.

This is why the majority of the fan base feels something is off.
