I know sometimes real Catholics bristle a bit at accepting the authority of the Pope when the Pope asserts something theologically that they don't like. That's human nature. But Vance was raised Protestant. When he was a grown man, he looked at the denominational landscape and proactively picked the one whose differentiating characteristic is the authority of the Pope. And then he talks down to the Pope, his spiritual father? He is not in it for the mandate given to St Peter. He is in it for the trad wives.
