I didn't think of that, but it's a good point. I guess there wouldn't be much you could do, but try to seize property. Would be difficult for renters or something though.

I'm of the opinion that we're probably spending too much on other services. The fire dept pension and back pay was a huge hit, and then the city was working with extra covid, hurricane relief and whatever else money like it was just a normal part of the budget. It just seems like we should focus on the simple things first (like trash), before doing stuff like installing colorful lights on 59 bridges or in downtown by Daikin (weird to type) Park.

Tokyo invests in infrastructure and social support - balance. It's bigger than New York but we spend more money for police? COME ON.

Houston stacks its XP in police. Neglecting other important categories at an accelerated rate.

Of course we have more crime, we're paying stupid amounts of money for cops to ride around on horses and support their pyramid scheme pension plan.

Texas is establishing a DOGE, how can I report HPD to them? Pension program. GOTTA GO.

Those days are gone. That eas the story a few elections ago, Houston becoming more blue.

Houston has budget issues, the first answer is more taxes

.. lol your MAGA governor has cut public funding year over year but somehow electing a republican mayor will suddenly the funding issues. Houston has a record amount of cops on the beat. If you want to fix violent crime maybe don't pass open carry laws that allow anyone to buy a gun without a background check?

    MAGA cultists

No city should elect the same party over and over again.

    All democrats since 1982

2 republican mayors in the city’s history

Public school funding has gotten worst
Healthcare system in Texas has gotten worst. We have less rural hospitals now than we at any point in the past 20 years
The electrical grid has gotten worst

Do you live in reality ?

Running municipalities are a different dynamic. Everyone wants less crime and clean streets. It's about funding.

As far as hisd is concerned it's actually well funded. Better school performance is a deeper issue. It's only so much the schools can do

Is there a discussion somewhere about Houston's new sanctuary city ordinance and Texas' threats to remove our mayor and defund our police? Because we can talk ad nauseum about what's going on on the other side of the planet, and somehow not much talk about a place where probably a plurality of posters actually live.

If you haven't heard, Houston passed an ordinance to reduce police' cooperation with ICE, with Whitmire's buy-in. Then Ken Paxton very predictably started an investigation. He can file a lawsuit that could result in the removal of Mayor Whitmire and/or city council members if Houston is clearly in violation of Texas' anti-sanctuary law. Abbott then very predictably said he would withhold $100 million in state grants for police funding. So Whitmire can't do an about-face fast enough.

Here is a pretty good article on it: Houston in showdown with state over immigration ordinance

Houstonians, fight the man or proactively capitulate? What's your preference?
