If you look at my post history I supported the IDF in the early days of Gaza war and said they needed to dismantle Hamas. I regularly attacked the braindead lefties who supported Hamas at college campuses. Issue was the IDF went after civilian population of Gaza and starved the population to a point of genocide. A huge percentage of New Yorkers are on public assistance (more than 1/5 residents of NYC are on food stamps). When the tax base leaves, who is going to be subsidizing them?
The truth is it needs to get a lot worse than Hochul begging for high net worth individuals to come back. If you're a critic, lay low and let them implode. The competent in NYC are getting pretty afraid. Right now Mamani is using a social media blitz and bot farming (I learnt about this from a marketing professional) to pretend like the foreign born US citizens that voted for him represent New York --- but we know it's a lie based on false promises. The rich are rich for a reason, they're already trimming elite headcount and sending them to Dallas, Florida and even Massachusetts. The show the mayor's office is putting on is one big fugazi --- and those things don't reveal themselves overnight.

Food stamps are federally-funded, so any flight of the elites won't negatively impact that. The NYC budget relies on an income tax, a sales tax, business tax, property tax (mostly commercial), and state and federal aid. If elites leave, it'll put a dent in the income tax (AI tells me the income tax on the top 1% accounts for 10% of the NYC budget, but I'm not going to take the time to verify that), but those other revenue streams will be fine. And you know, if it's not fine, those New Yorkers can follow the elites to their new cities and demand subsidies there.
