How is he a first option?

 

In the order of events, the literal first option is to get a stop and get Amen the ball on the run off of a rebound or turnover.

He’s one of the best grab and go players in the league and gets the ball up the court much faster than KD, Sengun, or even FVV.

He’s not the highest usage half court option but he’s our 1st option in a basketball game. Even when the defense gets back and it doesn’t directly lead to a bucket, Amen’s speed often gets us cross matches to start the half court possession.

In transition, sure. But against set defenses he just brings the ball up, hands it off to Sengun, either cuts or sets screen for KD and then we're basically watching a KD–Sengun two man game.

What his speed could lead to doesn't make him the first option. You're misunderstanding what a first option is in basketball. A first option is the focal point of the offense, plays are designed for him, screens are set to get him open, he touches the ball the most and he's the one taking shots in crunch time.

What you're describing is situational usage which depends on the matchup. Yes, against slower teams we might lean into his strengths, give him the ball more and use him as a slasher in that specific match up . But that doesn't make him the team's first option overall.

I would see if he'll take something similar to Sengun's deal, he just might bite on that. I think that's reasonable all things given; he didn't make the all-star team, almost certainly won't be All-NBA or DPOY or anything like that. He's had a decent season, I don't know if I'd call it disappointing given the circumstances and change in role, but I wouldn't say he exceeded expectations either.

 

Sure, market will determine the price tag. But it'd be great if Amen took a discount. Similar to what JG/Alpi got, would be great.

Now that the hype about him is losing traction compared to where it was last year, it seems fair.

It's not like he has earned the max in any way... If there is no discount, let him prove it.

I genuinely think he should get a Jalen level contract at best until he shows something resembling star level offense. Defensive specialists don't get remotely near to max contracts, regardless of how fast they run.

This half court shooting efficiency above all else trend to talk about winning basketball, doesn’t translate the way people act like it does.

Getting stops, easy looks, flow, and matching the other teams speed and athleticism on the court is a huge part of the game, even in the post season.

People are underestimating Amen Thompsons importance to this teams success.
