Fair enough. His knees are ****. It’s just that our best lineup is with Yordan in left field and he hits better there. I’d rather put our best lineup out there more than a 3rd of the season.
Are there more like Matthews and Cole? Guys that do almost everything well except put the bat on the ball consistently. I think Cole has more tools but he whiffs even more than Matthews. I hope his toe injury doesn’t impact him too long.
Haven't been watching the games outside of here and Google, have they changed their approach at the plate? Altuve drawing more walks, more patience ?
Yordan's risk of injury = A Risk of injury as DH only = B A-B = C Production gain in LF = D All 6 stars in 1 lineup = E Yordan's happiness at playing LF = F Is D+E +F > C ?
Yes. Just looking at the top 30 Huezo had 8 Hr/ 18 SB in 252 PAs w/ 29.8% K rate. Powell had 10HR/32SB in 366 PAs w/ 30.1%K rate and .233 BA Sullivan had 17HR/42SB in 481 PAs w/ 27.7% K rate and .220 BA
If everyone can stay healthy with Walker hitting at least like he did in the 2nd half last season, it doesn’t really matter what Diaz does. I think we were all hoping he would be a star bat but even if he just hits like he did last year that’s plenty valuable as a catcher batting 8th in the lineup. The problem is when you’re batting him 5th like he was often last season.
There's a notion that the more Yordan plays in the field the more his body will adapt, and actually protecting him from the field may make him more injury prone on mundane plays.
That might make sense for a 10 year old getting introduced to baseball. Probably not the case for a 28 year old who's been playing baseball his entire life. If his body hasn't adapted yet, I doubt it's going to over the next few months.
Our best lineup is with Yordan not on the IL. The goal should be to do what you can to keep him healthy and he can play LF every day in the playoffs.
His point, Captain Buzzkill, was that maybe his body hasn’t adapted for a reason. Maybe playing and running and throwing more frequently would help. Sitting him hasn’t really helped, we know that.
Yes that is the goal. just different opinions on how to get there the way that we’ve tried hasn’t seemed to help much lately.
He has played hundreds of games in the outfield in the majors, and who knows what when he was growing up in Cuba. I don't think an extra 50 this year is going to magically make his body adapt. Once you have bad knees, you probably generally continue to. The idea that sitting him hasn't helped isn't necessarily true. For all we know, he'd have played less games and blown out a knee if he played left field more. He's injury prone. Giving him more opportunities to injure himself is unlikely to decrease his injuries.
At this point, I think his odds of getting hurt each inning is already high based on his career to this point such that minimizing field work is probably a good thing. That said, I'd guess that corner outfielders are typically healthier than similar guys that DH, and have less injuries despite more chances to hurt themselves if they come up that way. 2B, 3B, and CFs are the guys who typically get hurt. 2B and 3B usually let themselves get bigger than SS's. CFs have more plays than RF and LFs, dive more, and hit walls at faster speeds.
I mean repetition. His body routinely being in the outfield making plays a few times a week can keep him loose enough to avoid tightening of his muscles. It's not like he's expected to run 100 yards and avoid tackles. But we all know freak injuries can occur so as long as he doesn't go all Ken Griffey Jr and scale a wall or dive for long shot plays then I think he is good.
lets try it once and see, so we know also “hundreds” of games in the outfield? It’s probably at a pace of about 25-35 a year.
