Do they have a decent fan base? I hate taking away another team and renaming them. I of course don’t want any team name but the Comets, but would prefer an expansion team over purchasing a franchise and moving it. Then again, the likelihood of me watching a WNBA game in the next 10 years are 1 in 500k.

Economically right now, Houston is really poppin. Either the most or second most commercial activity in the nation and several HQs moving here (we depleted OKC of 2 of their biggest companies a couple months ago), and now the Comets are back.

Considering this is a WNBA team, moving the franchise from Connecticut to Houston would not be much different than an expansion team. They will probably clean house of both management and players and start from scratch. LOL, within a few weeks, I bet most people will forget the Connecticut Sun ever existed.

and it was actually genius by Fertitta to buy an existing franchise because the leagues have something called an expansion tax
So every new team that comes in has to pay $50 million that gets split between all the current owners.
So Tillman baked in that tax in his purchase.
He paid $300 million while the other expansion teams paid $250 million because they also have to pay the $50 million expansion tax.

Here’s the genius part,
The WNBA is slowly rolling in multiple expansion teams over the next coming years.

Since we have an existing franchise, we get all the split franchise tax fees from those future expansion teams. And it totals around $50 million
So basically, he came in at the perfect time where he actually gets a new team CHEAPER than the other expansion teams.

and here’s where he literally played 4D chess now.

The WNBA draft rules are slightly different to try to already get ahead of the tanking issues the NBA has.
Their draft is based on the cumulation of your last 2 seasons, so a team would have to tank 2 seasons to get a high chance at the top pick.
Guess what?, the Sun had the 2 nd worst record last season, so we will clearly tank again to have the worst overall record for this upcoming draft with like 3 generational players in it.

Here’s the ultimate genius 4D chess move.
The WNBA didn’t want to punish bad existing teams by giving the top draft picks to expansion teams, so expansion teams don’t start getting to draft until after the 4th pick.

So because he has an existing team that’s already in tank mode, the Comets can actually get a top 3 draft pick next draft unlike expansion teams.

it was actually a master class in business and knowing the rules.

The Comets, the golden state team and whichever team comes in this year were smart to be at the right place at the right time because the other 3 expansion teams are pretty much going to cover their expansion tax.

And that’s why the WNBA players were mad because technically the WNBA team owners aren’t losing money with these expansions because that’s THEIR money , the league and players don’t get that.
