This is the least strategic-thinking administration ever. None of these guys can think beyond a media cycle or, where money is concerned, maybe an investment quarter. All they can do is puff up the tactical successes and ignore the tactical losses and strategic defeats. That means that success is defined by tactics and that means you must keep escalating to give yourself more tactical successes.

But again, as with all pretend movements, reality catches up at some point and now, no matter how much we negotiate with bombs, there is no way out without admitting defeat of some goals (however badly articulated) and putting the lie to your own rhetoric. How are we feeling about unconditional surrender these days?

Trump's vision of the military was forged in the battles of Top Gun, Rambo, and Commando. He likes his "kinetic strikes" that go boom on the teevee. He doesn't understand that war is hell because he evaded service and is incapable of learning from others.
