I saw the movie, and I liked it personally. Though I was slightly disappointed in the final look of the alien compared to what I had envision from the book, but doesn't really matter much. Will definitely make it into Prime since its produced by them.
I saw it and enjoyed it a lot. Didn’t read the book but this didn’t feel “hard sci fi” like The Martian. Spoiler Felt like the trailer spoiled too much initially but the alien is a major party of the story which I was not expecting. [/quote]
I've read the book and saw the movie Saturday. Very, very good. Much like Murderbot, the movie really captures the tone of the book.
Are the special effects any good? I haven't been to a movie theater in over 15 years, and most movies just seem like garbage, but this one seems interesting. Will probably get it on Bluray and watch it at home where I, hopefully, won't be shot or have parts of my car stolen.
The alien is a real prop. Most of the interior cabin of the spaceship is a real set. The space scenes are really awesome but most of the movie is either in the ship or flashbacks to earth. It's going to hit Prime at some point.
Thought it was OK. As with any movie related to space, you must suspend some basic knowledge of science, not to mention spacecraft design. I agree it was too long and could have been better with a few less scenes of Gosling looking befuddled or acting cute. Spoiler Also, I couldn't figure out how everyone was all happy about saving two stars but letting the rest of the galaxy go dark.
I enjoyed the effects. As mentioned they used a lot of practical effects so it didn't feel like what I was watching was 80% cartoon. I will say some of the low gravity stuff felt off. I don't know if they used the "vomit comet" much or tried to use wire work to simulate low gravity, but that is always a bit of a struggle. Overall I thought it was a fantastic movie, and I was really glad I watched it on XD on a big screen. There were some definite money shots/sequences that looked beautiful. Gosling was pretty good (he always is) and I enjoyed the story. I'll have to check the book out now.
Spoiler I agree, this wasn't covered in the book, either. Might be a good opportunity for a sequel book and movie based long enough in the future for both planets to recover and advance their tech.
Thanks! But Spoiler I didn't know there was an alien! LOL! Does Prime really give you 4k, though? I always buy the bluray/4k/uhd version of any movie that I really want to watch. Mostly because in the past "4k" movies on streaming services seem like they compress the video/audio a lot, and to where I'd rather have the bluray to watch movies I love. I think in the past Prime put things like Atmos and Dolby Vision behind a paywall where you pay extra to remove ads and now they're increasing the price of that paywall from what I hear. Thanks! I loved The Martian, so I don't need it to be a movie with warring factions of aliens in the depths of space - just need an interesting storyline with decent special effects - even if they aren't high-end, blockbuster special effects. Hell, I finally watched Babylon 5 with its comical special effects just a few years ago and the storyline/acting easily made up for the special effects which were decades old by that point.
Whoops. It's not really a spoiler for the movie or the book, as he shows up in the first act. Looks like Prime can stream 4K for an extra $5/mo.
