Depends on the context. For the Rockets, I think near top 10 overall is an okay ranking. However, that is almost entirely due to the Harden trade. It was a top 3 trade of all time, and no one can take that away from Morey. Outside the Harden trade, however, I'm don't think Morey did anything much of note with the Rockets. For the Sixers? Morey was downright awful. Easily bottom third in the league. The terrible Embiid extension and Paul George contract. The way he treated Harden. The awful McCain trade. The only thing decent he did with the Sixers is draft Maxey and VJ, and VJ was pretty much a no brainer.
man. Can’t believe people are leaving out the masterful way Morey got off Ben Simmons. That was like their Deshaun Watson trade. Not many GMs could have pulled that off. And drafting Maxey at 22 was not just a footnote. It might be the best draft pick made by any GM in the last 5 yrs. As far as the Embid extension, the owner demanded that extension. Crazy people are putting that all on Morey. The McCain trade was probably a mistake. But just remember who drafted McCain later in a bad draft in the first place. Morey is a thousand times better than what Houston had right now. He’ll be successfully managing another team soon.
Valid point - I had forgotten about the Simmons trade. However, Morey ruined that by picking Paul George over Harden. And how he approached the Harden situation likely tainted Morey's reputation among players for a long time.
find me someone who agrees with your opinion and I will continue. but until then, its obvious that you are a truly re*tarded and I should just end this here
Morey would do very well here. However, few caveats stick with me: * he's not much into developing player talent, he's into getting better via draft or trades * good / great coaches are not sticking around to find out Morey has made a LOT of really good roster moves in drafts/trades. Compare that with a truly crappy organization, he's definitely a good grab. But "Great" is the enemy of "good" -- I'm not expecting Morey to figure out how to get to the NBA Finals. But others definitely will be wanting that. And we will fail. And fans, even while having a great team, will STILL be spoiled ****ing brats who can't appreciate being in Conf Finals, or just out of the 1st round.
If u know that for a fact that’s very interesting. That was one of the key positive things u could point to about Daryl’s tenure there.
Morey was a trailblazer in recognizing value in rookie contracts and the false ceiling of max contracts. But it might have become a crutch where he failed to find the good fringe players or was gambling on availability of the max players. I think if GMs would start negotiating based on availability, we would see games played increase league-wide, and ultimately more parity in the league. If Morey was pressured to sign a flawed player by the owner, does that help or hurt him in his next job interview?
I think I read that a few weeks ago, but also there was a Rich Paul quote where he was saying he begged Elton Brand to take him in the draft after the Sixers wanted to trade the pick away. Morey was also only there maybe a couple of weeks before the draft that year, too, from what I recall, but not to say he couldn't have made the pick anyway.
