Gov Good Hair Continues To Live Rent Free in the Head of the GOP / Far-Right Media As a native Californian, in my books, the most effective Governor, by far, has been Jerry Brown. A distant second has been Ronald Reagan. Arnold Swarzeneger and Gavin Newsom have been just average. Though run-of-the-mill, Gov Newsom has been outspoken, not afraid to point out GOP shortcomings, much to the dismay of the Repugs. He has been living rent free in head of the GOP/far-right. They, in turn, have habitually ignored/discounted Calif’s successes and accomplishments, such as being the biggest “donor state” in the country — providing around $83 billion more to the federal government than it receives from the federal government — nearly three times as much as the next biggest “donor state.” 4th largest economy in the world, up from 7th largest 30 years ago, the global AI hub of the world, the sponsor of over 350 Nobel Prize-winning research projects, etc.
Instead, the GOP / far-right media have been conveniently cherry picking anything less-than-successful in Calif and use Gov good hair as the scapegoat. egs include, but not limited to: 1. Homeless problem, in particular SF. The homeless problem started in the late 1800s/early 1900s, spanning almost 20 Governors. But the Repugs / far-right media would have the world to believe that it started under Newsom’s watch. 2. Mass exodus of Californian residents to other states This trend---spanning 8 governors---started in the 1970s, before Newsom had started high school But the Repugs / far-right media would have the world to believe that it started under Newsom’s watch. They have refused to recognize that, since the beginning of the exodus, Calif’s GDP has risen from the 7th largest in the world to the 4th largest. 3. High-speed rail system It started 30 years ago, when GOP Pete Wilson was the Governor. Like Trump’s tariffs, it was ill-conceived. It has been a legal landmine to overcome, leading to cost overruns and delays Neither Wilson nor all 5 of his successors has built one track of high-speed rail But the Repugs / far-right media would have the world to believe that it started under Newsom’s watch. 4. Vegetated freeway-crossing Recent fires in SoCal have led to delays, tariffs have contributed to cost overruns. Repugs/far-right media have seized the opportunity to deride it as the “bridge to no where” Never mind that it is a crossing over the 2nd busiest freeway in metro Los Angeles, w an average daily volume of > 350K vehicles. 5. Massive fraud in unemployment benefits / hospice benefits There have been frauds/fraud investigations since the programs started. To the extend that Calif has the largest population, relative to other states, it has been massive.
