[War] Trump surrenders to Iran in a humiliating defeat

Taking action against something bad is not automatically moral. Actions themselves can cause more harm than doing nothing.

Starting an unjust war is immoral because war has consequences that are extreme and often irreversible. Elective wars are unjust. Iran had not attacked the US, and the US was not under imminent threat. This is an elective war started by the US. That alone is a moral problem, not just a strategic one.

 

In this case the bar to clear for inaction doing less harm than action is extremely high.

War is always a shitty mess for everyone, but, on paper, you can't convince me that getting rid of the current Iranian regime is not a just cause, let alone an immoral one.

If the execution turns into a genocidal rampage or the power vacuum introduced creates something worse then yeah, we can talk, but that's a bridge we've yet to cross.

Edit: I am not equating a morally righteous cause with a good idea. Intentions and outcomes are two different things.

 

Except that by that rationale there are scores of regimes that are morally justified in being attacked. While our nation has certainly engaged in immoral warfare, it hasn't been the stated goal and by and large we have been a force against such military actions.

I agree with you about the Iranian regime. They are murderous, oppressive, and entrenched.

He hates anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with him, and dares to question his authority, the legality of his actions, and his mental and physical health. He's just an angry old man, tweeting away like a mad hatter about how great he thinks he is, and how sick, deranged, evil, incompetent, and stupid everyone who doesn't love him is.

decent point, but the coup was actually British-engineered . . . the U.S. and CIA were pretty late to the party. Iranians should blame Churchill. But point taken. I will say that the hostage crisis consumed my senior year of high school and most of my freshman year of college, pretty much ruining both.
