China's economy is basically going to collapse if the blockade is solid and they are cut off from Persian Gulf oil for about 2 months.

A bit nore than 40% of China's daily oil imports and about 30% of their natural gas is transported to China by ship through the Persian Gulf.

China isn't messing around. This is an existential issue for them. Trump not listening to them on this could very well make starting WWIII look like the least bad choice for China.

 

Part of why blockade 2 electric boogaloo is kind of a pants-on-head dumb idea.

They import 11 million barrels a day to keep up with demand. Eliminate the imports and that 11 million barrels a day burns through the totality of your 1.5 billion barrel strategic reserve in 136 days.

Of course you would never do that because you need it for strategic (military) reasons. Even burning through half of the reserve to power the civilian economy would probably be reckless. You need to be able to keep your military moving in a worst case scenario. This is the same reason Washington freaks out every time the USA digs into strategic reserves. China obviously can offset that from other sources but there's no alternate source that can supply anything close to 11million barrels a day.

It's not nearly as much of a reserve at the ginormous number of 1.5 billion barrels makes it seems, given how much China imports to keep their economy running. Obviously they can slow down parts of their economy and release in drips and dribbles and make up with some exports from elsewhere, but there's no way that China's supply issues don't come to a head before the masochistic Iranians choose to relent and open the strait to everybody.
